Share Folder does nothing

When I go to the properties>Share tab of a folder and click Configure File Sharing nothing happens except asking me for the the sudo password. Once entered it does nothing and does not ask me again for the password if I push the button again.

I saw somewhere that someone said to do...

sudo apt-get install samba

Which I did..

I am afraid nobody will be able to help you with the above information or rather lack thereof. Perhaps you want to tick your own "share information" button first and add some info to your post

Sorry for not being clear enough.


My buddy running Linux Mint simply right clicks on a folder and can bring up options to share the folder. Kubuntu 8.10 seems to present something similar but nothing comes up/opens/happens when the button "Configure File Sharing" is clicked. As in no options or window opens to "configure" the sharing of that folder.

I have been playing with samba recently and have run into the same problems... it could be the 8.10 kubuntu is simply broken right now...

I haven't got any share option on a right click. What kind of network do you want, wrender?

It is not broken on mine, through selecting properties and then "share" you can then set up file sharing. However, unless you are on some form of network, there will be nobody for you to "share" with and thus there is nothing to set up. If you are say dual booting and want to access your linux files from within windows then there is an application that will enable you to do so- I don't think it will involve setting up sharing. If you want to share on a network, i.e giving others direct access to your files you will need to have installed samba and probably some filesharing options from within Windows as well.

It will therefore help us if you can say benefit you expect to derive from setting up sharing on your computer as on a stand-alone linux-only machine I can't see how it would serve any purpose.

Right now my windows machine has a Shared folder so I can put stuff in there to share over my router/hub with other computers. I would like to do the same with my kubuntu laptop.

The funny thing is that my kubuntu laptop can see the windows shared folder. So I have to assume that some part of samba/networking crap is working/installed.

Actually, I think we share the same problem

I have a laptop and have recently converted my windows installation to a virtual machine. I have got it set up so that from Kubuntu I can see the windows mydocs folder. However whilst it's progress I have a (non-virtual) Fat 32 data drive where I store the data and all documents I produce - it's athrowback to recent dual-booting days. It seems that no matter how much I bugger about with samba I can't get the virtual windows to see that drive - I don't care whether it can see any of the others.

I'm tearing my hair out on this one. Dibl has kindly in another thread posted a copy of his samba.conf file which I might just try shortly , although my present theory is that it might acvtually be a windows networking issue due to my setting up the windows fileshare first before setting up samba.

I'm sure I crack either the problem or my system soon!

As I stated in the included thread, mine got mostly working through using kde-nightly... it was indeed broken with the 4.1.3 for my 8.10 installation.

sigh.......... I guess I will just dream of the day when kde 4.2 comes out.

ps. How will that work when kde 4.2 comes out? I have unsupported updates enabled to get kde 4.1.3, will 4.2 come in that way as well?

I'm on 4.2 beta but IIRC I did do the setup whilst on 4.1.3. Also I suppose because I can see the windows files in 'buntu but not the other way around it could be simply that it is broken - in which case my problem might simply be that it still is

The right-click thing didn't work for me. BUT:

1) Make sure you can access a windows box. -->That way you know the network & client side samba works OK.
2) Install the system-config-samba from adept
3) Open from kmenu (applications->settings->samba)
4) Use this old-school looking dialog to set up shares.
5) Success!

Here are my settings. I only want a FAT 32 drive called DATA to be accessed from VMWare Windows

Run Samba - Basic settings

Set path to partition called Data
Access- Allow to everyone

Samba Server settings
Permissions Read/write
Visible
Description (my input) shared drive.

One thing that springs to mind - I had difficulty accessing the files on VMWare Windows from 'buntu until I turned off the Windows firewall (Zone Alarm). I am running a guarddog firewall. Could this be stopping it working?

I believe what you are referring to is system-config-samba, which wasn't installed from Synaptic with a general install of samba... I had to go looking for it. But in any case, when making a couple changes with that utility it actually broke my half working setup

I see there are packages for samba4... I wonder if this is what kde-nightly uses and therefore why it worked better than the standard 4.1.3 session

I'm sorry to hear that. I've added a warning to my post above. When I ran 2x the mentioned utility at the same time something bombed here too...it deleted the taskmanager area of the panel which I had to re-add. >

I'd be interested if someone else has a better method....cause bug-infested or not, this is the only way I've found so far that actually works.
