    no wpa with orinoco pcmcia

This is not a big problem, more an irritation. I am using a re-badged orinoco (silver I think) pcmcia card
It works fine with wep encryption, but not wpa.
    lshw gives this info:-

    driver=orinoco driverversion=0.15 firmware=Lucent/Agere 8.42

does this card not support wpa? Is it possible to update the firmware to enable wpa?
It means that my router has to be set for wep only for my other wireless devices.
    Thankyou

try wicd as your network manager
i had lots of issues w/ ne kind of encrypted network using knetworkmanager

i have an atheros card, btw so idk if its my card or knetworkmanager in general , but there seams to be a lot of issues in kde4 related to knetwork manager

Re: no wpa with orinoco pcmcia

thanks for advice, I've installed wicd through the repository, was a bit worried when
knetworkmanager was going to be removed, but wicd was a breeze to set up.
It's still wep at the moment, I thought I'd reply to this before I go into the router
setup and change to wpa. I'll post again when successful
(or from my desktop pc with wired network) if I'm not!

OK I'm writing this through windoze (dual boot) so I know the card suppots wpa,
but so far not in Kubuntu. Obviously I need to work on settings in wicd. I'll boot back
into Kubuntu and have another try.

No go with wpa. I've checked and double checked all settings. Gateway and DNS are
the same as my wired connection, the only difference is ipaddress.
When I click 'connect' wicd closes the wired connection and attempts to connect
wireless but fails, it never gets past 'validating authentication'.
I've tried 'wext' and 'madwifi' which I think is the right one for this card.
I had this problem with 8.04, and hoped it would be solved by 8.10.
          Any help would be appreciated.
If all else fails I'll go back to WEP, but I'll keep wicd as WEP worked fine.

i know on my network i ended up having to set up the MAC filter for my wireless clients. i turned off encryption and turned on MAC Filtering in my router for wireless clients. This works nice no wep to remember and my stuff just connects.. oh and stuff not on my list can see the network but can't connect at all. the only downside i see to this is your gonna have to add each device you want to use. but you only need to do it once.

That would be a bit of a pain for me as I get a lot of friends and family members giving
me their laptops to repair when they have completely borked their windoze installations!
              (not hard to do!)
I wanted wpa as my passphrase is easier to remember than my cryptic wep set of numbers
              and letters.
I assume from your comments that wpa doesn't work for you either?

well i have never tested WPA , i can say that WEP did not work w/ Knetworkmanager. i does work w/ wicd, give me a few and i will try w/ wpa and get back to u

Re: no wpa with orinoco pcmcia

ok so i just tryed a few encryption methods..
WPA-personal did not work at all (hangs on validating)
                  WPA2-personal DID WORK
WEP also seams to hang now (optaining IP address)

so if your router supports it look like wpa2 is the way to go (mine calles it wpa-personal) the encryption method is AES just incase its called something else on ur router

Re: no wpa with orinoco pcmcia

The only options on my router are:-
                      WEP
                      802.1X
                      WPA-PSK (which is selected)
                      WPA
I'm going to try WPA now

Re: no wpa with orinoco pcmcia

switching to WPA brought up required settings for :-

                        Radius Server IP
                        Radius port and
                        Radius Shared Key

the port is set to 1812, the shared key I can set, but what is the
                        Radius Server IP?
