So far I haven't found another thread that seems to address my problem (as far as I can tell). After upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10, eth0 (which was my wireless) has completely disappeared. All I've got left is lo, eth1 (wired), and pan0 or somesuch, which I've never heard of before. I've tried "dhclient eth1" as suggested on IRC, but I'm not sure how configuring my wired port was supposed to help in any way (and it didn't work anyway, regardless of purpose). This is all extremely frustrating, as is every upgrade for me, and it's pretty much making me want to downgrade back to 8.04, as if nothing had ever happened, if in any way that's possible.
My integrated wireless card is an Intel PRO/wireless 2200BG. There's nothing fancy in my setup, no static IP or anything, just your basic wireless theft from an unknown neighbor.
