Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG : gone and back again

My wireless network (Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG in a Dell Latitude D810) disappeared yesterday but came back after another update/upgrade cycle. Today it was gone again, and no luck with update/upgrade (yet).

    dmesg told me:
    ipw2200: ipw2200-bss.fw request_firmware failed: Reason -2
ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: -2

Solution: got the new firmware files from http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/ and put them in /lib/firmware/2.6.27-7-generic, did a 'rmmod ipw2200' and then 'modprobe ipw2200' after which dmesg was happy:
    ipw2200: Detected geography ZZE (13 802.11bg channels, 19 802.11a channels)
    And so was I.

    That happened to me

I had the same problem, on the same chipset. Wireless worked fine from the installation CD, and when I first booted. After the first round of upgrades it quit.

For me, installing linux-firmware did the trick.
