    wireless problem !

i have HP dv5-1010et model laptop and using wireless network for internet. Alpha 6 is able to see my ESSID name but never connects. though my wireless net is not secured except MAC security Alpha is not able to connect in any case to my wireless hotspot.

just for this i am not able to use Kubuntu Alpha 6 and am using Ubuntu Alpha 6 which has NO problem for this wireless.

any idea for Kubuntu has this problem ?

It's the Knetworkmanager bug, which just got fixed a day or so back. If you either grab a daily build iso or if you are able to connect by wire and update your packages that way you should be able to connect.

How is it fixed? Doesn't look like it to me.

It requires a reboot which doesn't illustrate it's fixed at all. I tried with a LiveCD and updating Knetwork Manager (Network Manager-KDE - what the heck is the difference? - there's two of them in the repository!) and it requires a reboot. It might upon reboot but I don't think that should count as it working. Why does it need a reboot? Am I entering Windows territory? :-/

It's unfortunate. So, is a reboot the only way to upgrade it and is it that upgrade that 'fixes' or repairs the Knetwork Manager? It would be nice if you didn't need the reboot. In Ubuntu, the Gnome Network Manager doesn't need a reboot, right?

reboot? I didn't have to (at least I don't remember having to, could be wrong). But I did do a fresh install this past weekend and it all works together now. We are still in alpha stage, remember and these things are to be expected. We aren't in a production-ready environment quite yet, especially with the amount of changes happening daily before they get to the rc stage . Heck, the reboot prompt could have been a mistake

Also, there may have been other upgrades (including a kernel update recently) that may be what is prompting the reboot

look at these links for descriptions of the two packages
        http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/knetworkmanager
        http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/network-manager-kde

If this were windows territory, it would require a reboot, keep you in suspense at reboot as it installs "stage 2" and then require a second reboot, only to download more crap you didn't ask for for "stage 3". After another reboot, you'd be back to abnormal.

I really don't understand the problem. I didn't think uptime was a big goal when major updates shoot out as quickly as they do in a testing cycle.

Well said! That is what I was looking to say, but at 1230AM after a very long day at work, I shouldn't be typing

What do you mean, you don't understand the problem?

It didn't work although it was a LiveCD. Well, I couldn't test whether it would work on the reboot as it was a LIVE CD. Maybe it would but a 'fixed' Network Manager (from an upgrade/change/update whatever) shouldn't need a reboot, should it?

I just entered the password for the wireless account.

Anyway, regarding the reference or comment on Windows/rebooting, I was just being sarcastic. There are many things I like about Linux/Ubuntu but wireless and now Pulse Audio are giving me headaches. Oh yeah, X (Server ) and installing (Nvidia) video drivers is somewhat of a minor one.

But, what is frustrating in particular is that wireless works for me in other distros, in particular, Fedora 9 and I'm not sure what is preventing a similar experience in Kubuntu. It's in the KDE version so why can't Kubuntu figure out what's needed? Wireless in Ubuntu (8.10) works for me but then I'm using the Gnome Network Manager.

Again, Intrepid is using newer versions of network-manager(backend) and network-manager-kde (its gui) than Fedora.

Again, Intrepid is still in the development stage where these things are found and fixed.

Again, this problem has been fixed with even newer versions of networkmanager and network-manager-kde

Again, have you tried a newer live-cd?

And yet again, if you need all the things to work like they do in Hardy, keep with 8.04 until 8.10 is final

I can't think of why it would need a reboot, restarting knetworkmanager should be quite enough (to start the newer version).
If the NetworkManager daemon has also upgraded, then you might need to restart that service, too...but this probably isn't absolutely necessary.

As far as LiveCDs go...I think the alpha6 livecd still has the old (non-functional) knetworkmanager on it...upcoming beta should be up-to-date.

Of course you may need to install the drivers for your wlan card depending on the make and model of your card, and load the modules needed (on reboot, these should be automagically loaded). This applies to ubuntu, as well.

I have a Compaq CQ50-108CA and I have the same issue, I SEE the wifi networks, but I try to connect and no joy. I updated to 1.07 last night for the networkmanager but still doesn't work. I had to recompile the latest MadWifi and same thing.
Restarted the Networkmanager or reboot the system didnt working.

Just to check, what's the full package version number of 'network-manager-kde' package installed on your machine?

Ok Ive gotten it to work using a Aug release of the madwifi drivers.

In Knetworkmanager i had to manually add my wifi to it since in the scan it couldnt find my AP.

Well that was short lived. I connect but seem to loose connection shortly after. I still remain connected to wifi but no traffic is flowing. Starting to wonder if there is a issue with the AP but it seems to work fine when using Windows.
