Upgrade hung, now 8.10 is in but keyboard doesn't work

I upgraded to 8.10 after using the live CD on my Acer Ferrari. All seemed to work beautifully and I was seduced by the flashy graphics.
Now, when I boot into KDE I first noticed that as each icon appeared while loading I never saw the KDM icon as I did on all of the other machines I had upgraded. Then the forms don't show up fully and while I can use all of the control keys (CTRL+ALT+BKSPACE, etc) I cannot type in a konsole window. I can however type in an OpenOffice document.
I believe that if I could rerun the upgrade I would be fine. I have manually installed all, per the Kubuntu website, packages that make up 8.10 but the problem persists.
I blew away the .kde and .kde4 directorys, but the problem persists.

    Any clues are appreciated

OK, all is well now. I had to back out to XUbuntu via the remove script at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce
Then a quick sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop I am back in play with the latest KDE

    Cheers
