    updates for 8.10

    Hi.. i just now reloaded my repositories.. it is giving me 80 upgrades.. 10 new installs etc..

    im still on kde 4.1 ..

    should i go ahead ? (this is my office system so cant screw it up)

    Before doing any update/upgrade, you should check to see if anything is going to be removed. If you are using the command line:

    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

    will give you a list of what is going to be upgraded, installed and removed, and one last chance to answer Yes or No. Synaptic has a similar screen. Always check carefully for what is going to be removed. I didn't once, and it removed Network Manager. You don't want that to happen.

    It goes without saying that you should always make a backup before doing any updates. An innocent looking update to my debian system once killed X. Horror stories abound; backups are just about essential, in my opinion.

    Example: the last update to Ubuntu-8.10 threatened to remove koffice, which I use on that system. So I held back on the relevant packages.

      i use synaptic..

      when i say mark updates..

      it shows : trying to remove : kdeplasma-addons-libs4 and libplasma2
      to be installed and upgraded too many to write.. :|

        The big upgrade is likely due to KDE4.2 being added to intrepid-backports repository (which you have enabled in your sources.list). It should be safe to remove kdeplasma-addons-libs4 and libplasma2, since those packages are not part of KDE4.2 (libplasma2 has been superceded by libplasma3 in 4.2, for example).

          Hope it's not a prob to tag along on this topic, since it's very similar with what I would like to know.

          When KDE 4.2 gets into Recommended updates (or something like that) should we still be cautious about plasmoids/widgets as it says here, will there still be a need to stop/remove them. As terrordrone said I'm a bit cautious about upgrading because of the risks of losing X or something as I've read here a lot of people had to deal with. It happend to me once with upgrading network-manager-gnome and now I triple check before upgrading

            4.2 will never be more than a backport in Intrepid. The issue with plasmoids is that the underlying libraries changed between 4.1 and 4.2 making the old ones incompatible with the new ones. Thus you may have to remove some plasmoids from your desktop and re-add them.

            Worst case scenario with upgrading 4.1 to 4.2 and broken plasmoids would mean deleting 2 config files (~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc and ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc) and doing a logout/login

                Guys..

                in my home machine.. i had installed kde 4.2 as said in the kubuntu site.. through the ppa repository

                now that its moved into backports.. should i disable the ppa repository ?

                  Hi guys..

                  i updated sucessfully...

                  however there is a small issue..

                  the 'data providers' field is empty when i try to fetch new themes etc ?

                  how do i add a source or fix this ?



                  Also..

                  when try to install anything through synaptic.. it shows unchanged -> gwenview
