Upgrading from Kubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 - Problem

    Hi there,

I am new to this forum, and am hoping amongst the wealth of knowledge on here that someone can try and assist me.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop (Model number: PSA30E00 RL5G3) which i previously had Kubuntu 8.04 installed on it with no issues. I received the latest Ibex 8.10 cd's and wanted to upgrade. However i have not had any success. Trying to upgrade from the CD is a no go. I have tried the command line which takes me to the Upgrade Version on Adept, but the file is almost 700M to download, defying the whole purpose of being able to upgrade via the CD. I am not sure if one can upgrade in this manner or via the CD, but i tried to run a fresh install of 8.10 with no luck.

Strangely enough, my PC at home which also had the older Kubuntu 8.04 on it installed and upgraded with the same CD with no issues.

Anyone that can assist me, i would be very grateful.

    Thanks!

What exactly happens when you try to upgrade? Or when you attempt a fresh install?

      Have you got Synaptic?

If you have, put the Intrepid CD in the CDRom and go Edit>Add CD-ROM. Does the Intrepid CD now appear as a Repository? (Settings>Repositories>Third Party Software - should appear at the top, or near the top, of the list.)

You can temporarily untick every box or Third Party Software EXCEPT the Intrepid CD and update from there.

Ok, i have Synaptic, followed your instructions. Once i added CDRom.. and checked to see if it was a repository, it appeared in the list toward the top. I unticked all the other boxes, reloaded. But how to go further i am unsure... please can you assist me further.. i am still very much of a NooB to Kubuntu :P

        Thanks

Have you updated it from the CD? If you haven't, in Synaptic, hit "Reload" and then do the update...

If it updates from the CD.

            1) Edit your sources list. Open a terminal and issue the command
            kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list
( kdesu fairly recently became kdesudo - so if kdesu doesn't work used kdesudo!)

This should open your sources list in the editor called Kate. Use the "Find and Replace" facility to automatically find: hardy and replace it with: intrepid

            Save and close.

            2) Go back to Synaptic and reverse the ticks i.e. remove the CD tick and replace all of the others. That will (a) stop it keep asking for the CD as a repository and (b) enable any remaining updates by internet

Reload and look for any updates.
