new install with 4.2 and compiz, screensaver, toutube fullscreen problem

    Hello,

I am sorta familiar with K X Ubuntu, I really like the look of 4.2. I installed 8.10 and then did a full upgrade with the 4.2 repository active. That went well. I then installed everything compiz except development and gnome versions. I could not get compiz-kde to install i got a message:

    APT Error. Context:
    Package download failed,
Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.,
    :

Now when I boot it doesnt start automatically, it goes to kwin (kwin is pretty cool now), so I change it over and its good. Though I cant get the desktop pager to display 4 desktops in 2 rows. I used to the past few boots.

Another problem is x screeensaver. I think i can find the answer by searching but, when i start it it says:

The XScreenSaver daemon doesn't seem to be running on display ":0.0". Launch it now? I click ok

    Directory does not exist: "/usr/share/backgrounds"

and all the previews are choppy.

Another problem is youtube/embeded videos is extremely slow and hardly works when fullscreened but works fine when normal size.

Please teach me and help me.

    Thanks

Re: new install with 4.2 and compiz, screensaver, toutube fullscreen problem

I had the same error - only my computer is a paperweight now. Once the desktop comes up, it quits taking keyboard input, no window manager comes up so I can't move, resize or close applications, and most of the options in my control panel don't work because it can't find modules. This is NOT my idea of an upgrade and I don't want to have to reinstall from scratch. Considering I saw no problems posted for the past month after people started updating to 4.2, I certainly wasn't expecting this. Someone help, please??

I'm not sure you need compiz-kde, actually (and strangely, perhaps). I'm running Compiz very happily on KDE 4.2 (there's a screenshot in the Gallery, from last week). I use the Emerald window decorator, not kwin, but I don't think that's relevant to whether you need the compiz-kde. I have the compiz-gnome package installed (and yes, I'm running Kubuntu, and not Ubuntu). compiz-kde is not installed here.

@vaasnaad, Before installing or attempting to run Compiz, make sure you have GLX working correctly, by entering in a console window
      Code:
      glxgears
and observing that it works. If it doesn't run, then you've got video driver issues to work out before you run Compiz.

        I have emerald installed also.

the Gears gave me ~2.5fps and everything gets slow. I have a 7600gt overclocked at 1680x1050 60hz. I have had problems in the past with this, not initially though.

I uninstalled the drivers. restarted. ran glxgears and got ~150fps. so i installed envy qt and intalled the recommended driver and ger ~3 fps. should i try another driver or is it something else?

ok I used envy and jocky to install all 3 of the drivers. none work well. when envy deactivates the driver it works pretty good.
whats going on? should I go back to KDE 3.5?

            Any help

Re: new install with 4.2 and compiz, screensaver, toutube fullscreen problem

I'm thinking that you could try the following: remove compiz, emerald, and everything else compiz related. Install the drivers that gave you 150 fps. Select the KWin window manager in the desktop effects configuration and enable desktop effects. This is more or less the default settings, and should give you an idea that your configuration is working.

After you get that working, you can try adding compiz, etc, but having a known good configuration is reassuring that the basics are right.

                Hi

I had a similar problem with 4.2 upgrade where all the programs did not download properly.
I could not change the window size and type into any KDE programs.
I finally fixed the problem by reinstalling Kwin from the command line in shell
Hope this might be of some help
