Size mismatch on libpcre3_7.8 during KDE update to KDE4.2

I tried to update KDE 4.1 to KDE4.2 according to the instructions at

http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2

(I'm in Intrepid.)

I added the repository and pgp key. But I didn't have Adept Updater tool in the system tray, so I used the Update Manager ("Software updates") in the launcher.

First, it said "Not all updates can be installed". So I chose a partial upgrade. After 1.5 hours of download, the last file, no. 235, bombed with

Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-exp...~ppa1_i386.deb Size mismatch

and the update aborted. I tried again, and it only loaded file no. 235 -- with the same problem.

What gives? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Have you tried downloading the .deb and placing it in /var/cache/apt/archives? (Need to use sudo to place it there.)

The mismatch would seem to me to be a difference between the file and what's in the headers. Have you reloaded the headers? In Adept, it's fetch current package lists under sources.

I reloaded the headers, as you suggested, and downloaded the file to a local directory, then copied it to /var/cache/apt/archives and chowned it to root. When I launch the update, it insists on reloading file 235 and gives the same error message.

Have you tried

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade --fix-missing

Did the 2 apt-get commands. Then retried the software upgrade. This time, it wants to download file 177, but it's still the same and still in error. I tried downloading the file myself and copying it to /var/cache/apt/archives, chowned as root:root, but apparently it "remembers" somewhere that it couldn't download that file, erases my copy and starts over.

It's dinner time here now. I'll get back to this tomorrow morning.

Ok, I understand what you (very correctly) meant, so I looked at the pages you recommended, as well as the apt-get site. I hadn't known about the fix-missing option.

I changed my update source to the US server, in case there was a problem at that level. Apparently, there wasn't.

I reran sudo apt-get upgrade --fix-missing and the end of the output is quite clear:

Impossible de récupérer http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-exp...~ppa1_i386.deb Taille incohérente

In case you don't read french, "Taille incohérente" means "Size mismatch". So it's the same error. And sure enough, the file is not there. And of course, software upgrade gets the same error.

(I don't know why apt speaks to me in french. I live in France and so have a fench time zone, but my system is otherwise entirely in english. But that is not the problem I'm most concerned with.)

I don't know if it's related, but what in the world are all those tildas in the file name? They look like backspaces or something.

well, I'm new here. And I also upgrade to KDE 4.2 last night.
I met a similar problem before, said something is moved
Then I was asked to use this to refetch the list?

sudo apt-get update

After that, the upgrade works fine.

sudo apt-get upgrade

btw, I had to use recovery mode "fix file system" or something like that for the MySQL installation after that...

I gave up and installed JJ alpha 4, which works quite well. It's still missing a few things (pwmanager, separate wallpapers for each screen, etc.), and has a few problems (various servers crash at boot), but it's very useable.
