upgrading 8.10 from KDE 4.1 to 4.2 - plasmoid problem?

I installed 8.1 and upgraded from KDE 4.1 to 4.2 without problems. I received the client machine. 8.1 installed fine once I found the post to set the SATA controller to ACHI.

But when I try to upgrade to KDE 4.2 I get the following message:

    Commit failed.
To continue, hit ok and we will try to recover. If you close the application now, we will not do anything and you may try to resolve the problem manually.
(If you suspect this is a bug in Adept, please also provide the following exception description in the report).

The recovery doesn't work and gives the following message:

    APT Error. Context:

Which (to me) indicates the 4.2 window manager isn't going to install.

I tried the dpkg --configure -a and/or apt-get -f install instructions, but things went from bad to much worse. A reboot later and login wouldn't work. I did a console/shell login in and the commands wouldn't work.

I reinstalled 8.1 and using adpet looked for plasmoid anything. I got no hits, even though the there's a "Welcome to the Notes Plasmoid!" yellow sticky on the desktop.

    The computer (ASUS V3-M2A690G):
    http://pclinuxoshwdb.com/index.php?o...d=866&Itemid=1

    and the manual for it:
    http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/Bar...s-m2a690_u.pdf

From what I read the motherboard is M2A-VM HDMI

The video card is ATI FireMV 2200 64MB PCI:
    http://ati.amd.com/products/firemvseries/specs.html

I have not loaded the ATI propriety drivers.

Before I shoot my foot again, what do I do different so KDE 4.2 installs? (semi confused since the install on my dev system went fine.)

Re: upgrading 8.10 from KDE 4.1 to 4.2 - plasmoid problem?

    Hi holyfeld,

I had the same problem and after a few hours of hair-pulling I finally got everything working. I had to install everything manually by entering a root shell from the recovery menu, but maybe this isn't necessary.

For some reason apt-get would not display available upgrades that showed up in adept, so I copied down the names of all the packages to be upgraded and manually installed them with apt-get. Not all the packages were installed but this caused the rest of them to then show up as upgrades. At this point most of the available upgrades wouldn't install because they were "held back" (don't know what this means, I'm fairly new to linux), so I again used install instead of upgrade.

I'm not entirely sure why I stopped getting the error from the kde-window-manager deb, but I think the problem stems from the window manager trying to install before a required dependency, then throwing an error which halts the upgrade without installing said dependency. Manually installing all the upgrades first then reinstalling the window manager seems to do the trick. Hope this helps, since I'm not entirely sure how I fixed it myself.

      Hi,

I just got it run though. The problem you got was the dependency of libplasma3, this package should be installed before other packages.

The solution is to install libplasma3 and other basic KDE4.2.0 packages (kde-windows-manager, kde-workspace-bin/lib4-5/data) in Synaptic Package Manager, and then update. Everything will run smoothly.

      Enjoy,
      Shiqing

So how I solved this. Similar to the above but slightly different.

        1. Using Synaptic I removed every package that hinted at having plasmoids.
        2. Followed the instructions for upgrading to KDE 4.2 using Adept.
        3. The upgrade had issues similar to my initial post.
        4. The dpkg --configure -a did nothing.
        5. The apt-get -f install completed the install of KDE 4.2 just fine!

Other details (not sure they're relevant):
        1. I installed an nVida card and the proprietary driver AND
        2. Moved to the 64bit distro
        prior to the 4.1->4.2 upgrade.
