Have to leave for a home but my thinking is that you're missing some packets since your upgrade to 4.2 stoped half way. Have you tried going into safe mode and selecting fix packages? Or try

      sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

      sudo apt-get install kdeplasma-addons

      Kubuntu

        i did

        sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -f install (as it said ' you may want to use the -f option ' )
        sudo apt-get upgrade
        sudo apt-get autoremove

kde is coming... its kde 4.2 ..

        but there is keyboard
also the windows have no minimize/close buttons..  the whole bar is not present

watever i type is not being shown

anyway i can completely remove kde and reinstall it ?

@dibl can i have your ID which you use to IM ?

Looking at your previous post I would start with makeing shure that all packages are actually installed:

          sudo apt-get install kate kdeplasma-addons kdebase-workspace-libs4+5 ksysguard kdebase-plasma plasmoid-quickaccess kdebase-workspace-bin

or one by one to see what goes wrong

            when i do a apt-get upgrade

            it says :

the following packages have been kept back:
            gwenview kmail kopete

Make sure you have installed the "language-pack-en" package,

and any other language if you need another one.

Re: Error while updating to KDE 4.2

Why are these packages held back? What is the result if you try to install them:

                sudo apt-get install gwenview
                sudo apt-get install kmail
                sudo apt-get install kopete

                that might give a clue

I had the same problem you had, I just uninstalled gwenview, kmail and kopete and then reinstalled them all and then I noticed they were the newest versions of their respective apps.
                  Multibooting: Kubuntu Noble 24.04
                  Before: Jammy 22.04, Focal 20.04, Precise 12.04 Xenial 16.04 and Bionic 18.04

This is probably due to the packages in question wanting to install new packages as dependencies...in such a case you need to do 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade', sudo apt-get upgrade won't upgrade packages that (due to changed dependencies/conflicts) need to install new packages or remove old packages. The distinction is the same as with 'Safe Upgrade' and 'Full Upgrade' in GUI package managers.

Probably, but if you had problems with your old .kde, those will be back, too. It doesn't hurt to try (you may want to back up your new .kde first) or you can only copy back the data you need (like user installed/created desktopthemes, that reside in ~/.kde/share/apps/desktoptheme)

Note that with KDE4.2, you can install the freshest versions of popular desktopthemes by installing the package 'plasma-desktopthemes-artwork'

It doesn't matter. dist-upgrade doesn't upgrade your release version (intrepid-->jaunty), unless you change your source repositories from intrepid to jaunty (in /etc/apt/sources.list).

The command name is a bit misleading, as it doesn't have anything to do with upgrading a distribution release version (aside from the fact that you obviously want to use it when actually switching from release version to release version).

Many problems with upgrades can actually be solved by using dist-upgrade instead of upgrade, although I strongly recommend checking what it wants to do before answering 'yes' on whether to commit changes (as it will sometimes uninstall packages as well as add them)
