problem upgrading from Kubuntu 8.04 to 8.10

Hello Guys,
I tried to upgrading kubuntu to 8.10 but something didn't work well in fact the the procedure "kdesudo --dist-upgrade" crashed , so I tried to continue by manual procedure (apt-get update and apt-get upgrade) and after many tempts the work ended. The result is Kubuntu 8.10 with a bad KDE 3.5 instead of KDE 4.1 or 4.2. The start up is long and before the login panel I have the error "cannot open theme file /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/kubuntu" .

Please can you give me any indications to go correctly in 8.10 or come back in 8.04 ??

Once you started to 'continue by manual procedure' you potentially introduced so many variables we really can't give you any specific advice or information.

Except one thing: I would re-format the drive (you *did* back up all your data, didn't you?) and install 8.10 without trying to upgrade.
