    Kde 4.1 will not start.(Solved)

When I try to log in to kubuntu on my wife's computer, kde stops loading, and gives me the error message; "The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE: "no write access to /home/*******/.ICEauthority./"

KDE is unable to start. "

I have tried fixing Xserver in recovery mode, reparing broken packages, reinstalling kde and a couple of blind shots. The computer runs KDE4.1. Any commands that can fix this?

Check manuals of chown and chmod. Chown changes ownership of files/directories (change ownership of .ICEauthority to youruser/yourgroup). Chmod changes permissions on files/directories (give owner and group write permissions). Easy and painless way - use Midnight Commander file manager (sudo mc).

The system cannot find a file called ICEauthority.....?

Notice the dot at the beginning of the filename. You must include the dot in the chmod/chown command arguments

Re: Kde 4.1 will not start. (SOLVED)

What exactly would be the command here? I have tried "chown user /.ICEauthority and similar strings, but nothing seems to yield results. It certainly doesn`t fix the problem.
What could cause something like this in the first place? The install worked fine yesterday, exept I had to manually start knetworkmanager.

EDIT: I ran the command as written above, but this time I inverted the slash......and bingo.
The command then was "chown user \.ICEauthority"

          Thanks for helping.

Root operations done from the user's home directory, such as installing software, copy/pasting files, etc.

Actually, it seems what may have caused this is trying to start knetworkmanager with sudo in the terminal. Last night the internet connection was suddenly gone, and i ran "sudo knetworkmanager" to get it started again. It didn't work, but today the problem with starting kde was back. I now how to fix it now, but I remember doing the same thing before the problem appeared the first time.
