    Tell a bit more

What are you trying to install ?
How are you trying to install ?
From where ? From repositories ?
Do you get error messages ?

    With the konsole:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install <package>
You should get an error message, if you are trying to install a package from the repositories.

How did you try to run the program ?
Did you get error messages ?

    With the konsole:
    Code:
    <executable>
You should get more information (errors).

    Example:

    Package: VLC is installing
    Code:
    dpkg -L vlc
    /.
    /usr
    /usr/bin
    /usr/bin/qvlc
    /usr/bin/svlc
    ...
    /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop
    ...

=> VLC will start with the
qvlc, svlc and vlc in the konsole
    :~$ vlc
    VLC media player 0.9.8a Grishenko
[00000001] main libvlc debug: VLC media player - version 0.9.8a Grishenko - (c) 1996-2008 the VideoLAN team
    ...

I've seen that when you install something from the repositories it will NOT appear in the menu until you reset x-windows. Perhaps that's what this fellow is talking about.

Just today I installed gimp using adept. Adept reported all was well, but when I checked the Kickoff Application menu it wasn't there. Logged of - restarted X (via Alt-E) and re-logged and it was there.

I've seen this on every application I've installed so far.
