    Kubuntu 8.10, over the top?

I use a nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1) graphic card and a Acer AL1916 monitor. Pretty common stuff, I guess. What happened?
Kubuntu 8.04 Live CD recognized my system flawless.
Kubuntu 8.10 Live CD didn't get through the startup routine and stalled (some kind of Blue (and pink) Screen of Death)

I am a linux user since 1997. My question: as Kubuntu 8.04 supports my system and Kubuntu 8.10 doesn't support my system anymore, is the development of Kubuntu over the top and do I have to go back to Windows XP?

There is a new X.org display system in 8.10, as explained in the release notes:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810

That is probably why there is some issue with your NV34 chip.

So, you can use 8.04 LTS for a long time -- 8.10 does not add anything significant except KDE4, as far as I know.

I can't remember if the 8.10 LiveCD has this option, but have you tried Safe Graphics mode just to see if it gets you through.

Safe Graphics will give a resolution of 800 x 600. It isn't workable. I tried openSUSE Live CD and it worked flawless and 4.2 gave me a big smile. I don't like Novell for the well known reason, but as Kubuntu doesn't support my system I don't have a choice, do I?

Uhm how is 800x600 not workable for a liveCD or install?
Once installed you may have better luck or at least be able to get it working.
Does not seem like a reason to abandon a distro you like if you cannot boot a live cd.
            IMO.

I've seen a few cases where the LiveCD only works in SafeGraphics mode, but the installed OS works like it should.

Likely cause for the difference between 8.04 and 8.10 is the new (configless) Xorg in 8.10 (which is by no means perfect)
