kde 4.2 crashes on login, Ubuntu 8.10

Here is short description of my actions:

    0. I have Ubuntu 8.10 with nvidia 7600GS; problem persists with 177.xx, 180.11 (from launchpad) and 180.25 drivers

    1. I used following repository for kde 4.2:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-experimental/ubuntu intrepid main multiverse restricted universe

    2. Installed kubuntu-desktop, selected kdm as a default display manager

    3. Reboot

    4. Login to kde fails, there are following lines in syslog:

    Jan 29 00:33:05 dhazin kernel: [ 464.893443] kded4[9823]: segfault at 0 ip 48be08a5 sp bf8be9d0 error 4 in libQtGui.so.4.4.3[48a34000+8f5000]
    Jan 29 00:33:05 dhazin kernel: [ 464.985041] kcminit_startup[9827]: segfault at 0 ip 48be08a5 sp bfd74f90 error 4 in libQtGui.so.4.4.3[48a34000+8f5000]
    Jan 29 00:33:05 dhazin kernel: [ 465.107018] ksmserver[9829]: segfault at 0 ip 48be08a5 sp bfeb5fd0 error 4 in libQtGui.so.4.4.3[48a34000+8f5000]

Is this a known bug and can I do anything to workaround it? Should I post bug report somewhere and if yes what information should I place there?

Does Gnome DE work OK for you? In other words, does it appear that the new Nvidia driver is working correctly? I'm still running 180.22 -- I just noticed they have a new Beta driver out.

Those "segfaults" are not a bug that has been reported, to my knowledge. I haven't attempted to install the released 4.2 -- the 4.2rc is very stable here and I'm kinda busy. But my guess would be that something is wrong with the installation.

Yes, Gnome works just fine with compiz with all versions of drivers that I mentioned (and even with kdm ).
Regarding installation: I tried to remove all kde packages with 'completely remove' option, remove .kde dir from my home dir, then install kubuntu-desktop again. Unfortunately nothing changed
Btw, what should be the _correct_ way to install?

Btw, what is the second icon on kde splash screen? after i hit enter on login screen, it shows kde splash screen (black bar in the middle of the screen) with harddrive icon for few seconds and after that crashes

In what way does it fail? E.g. are you returned to the login screen, do you get some error message or is it just stuck somewhere in the process.

Also, regarding your question about the right way to install: does that concern installation of KDE or of video drivers (or something else)?
Once your problem is solved please edit the first post of your topic and add [SOLVED] in front of the subject. In that way, others can benefit from your experience!

As I wrote above, after I enter my username and password and hit enter, kde starts loading, it shows a black bar in the center of the screen with appearing hard drive icon, and after that (when I guess second icon should appear ) it becomes black screen and then returns back to the login.

Also, regarding your question about the right way to install: does that concern installation of KDE or of video drivers (or something else)?
My question was about KDE installation.

Thanks for your answers, I really want to try it out

Have you tried to rename your existing .kde directory and let KDE4 create a new one with default options? Have you checked .xsession-errors file for error messages (usually more informative than system logs)? Do you have free space problem on /home partition?

Yes, I tried to remove .kde directory.
I think there is no space problem.. and thanks for the hint, i'll check .xsession-errors today when I'll come at home.

I don't know what's the reason for it, but /etc/init.d/dbus status returns 'running'

Who's the owner of .ICEauthority file and what are its permissions (output of 'ls -lah .ICEauthority' in user's home directory)?
A bit of a long shot - try to create a new user and check out if you can log in.

and all your settings for kde are in your /home/<usrname>/.kde dir...... how strange seeing how you deleted the folder

It might be some other system important file/directory in your user's home that creates the problem. You can compare your old home with new user's:
                              1. look on permissions and ownership of ALL files and directories;
                              2. check if there are some files missing in your old home (especially those starting with dot)

Alternatively you can use the new login and migrate your saved setting there.
