upgrading to ibex, get "must kill kdesktop_lock manually"

I started upgrading to Ibex from Hardy last night before bed. When I went to bed it was downloading files still. This morning when I went to check on it I get the dreaded "must kill kdesktop_lock manually" message. I have no way of knowing where it is in the upgrade process as I can't get out of the screensaver.

How can I get around this? Will it be safe to do a hard shutdown? Is there a way to get to a terminal and do xkill?

Did a hard shutdown, was not happy, i get an error that it can't get beyond when starting up Kubuntu now, will have to put more info down later.

had to use recovery from the older version of kernel to access, did dpkg repair and that solved it. Running 8.10 w/o trouble.
