Unable to log out / shutdown / restart

    Hi all!

I recently upgraded my KUbuntu from 8.04 to 8.10. I'm having a few teething pains but I am working through them on my own. However I have a problem that I have been stuck with from the beginning that I am unable to solve by myself so I figured it is time to reach out to the community for help.

I've searched the forums here and Google for people having the same troubles but have not found anything.

I can't log out, shutdown or restart from inside KDE. I click on the KMeun and select the 'Leave' tab then select either of the three options I mentioned and nothing happens. The menu disappears but nothing else. The system is still running. It's as if I didn't do anything. If I press ALT+F2 to bring up the application launcher and type 'logout', for example, it will show the log out icon. Selecting it has the same result as going through the menu: nothing. CTRL+ALT+DELETE does nothing.

There is nothing of relevance in my .xsession-errors file. Nothing in dmesg. Nothing in the Xorg log file. Nothing.

I can use CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to kill Xorg taking me back to KDM where shutdown and restart do work properly. However this has the drawback of not saving my session when I log out. And it feels like a kludge.

I'm out of ideas on where to look. Can someone give me a clue as to where to look / what to do to get this working?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Andrew,
That's the exact same problem I've been having. Have you found a solution since your post?
Is there anyone who can shed some light on this particular issue?

I upgraded to KDE4.2 yesterday and still have this 'log out / shutdown / restart' issue AND I've also lost my window's titlebars!

    HELP!
After all, what would a monkey be without its bells?

This is a "window decorator" problem, related to running "desktop effects" or Compiz. It may be related to the shutdown problem, or possibly not.

I have not experienced the shutdown problem. If it were me, I would try:

        (a) disabling the desktop effects and/or Compiz, and then
        (b) renaming the ~/.kde directory and then restart the system.

You will, of course, lose all custom settings in this process.

Try system settings/advanced/session manager. There are some useful shutdown options you might like to play around with in there.

I am having the same issue with 8.10 and JJ.

Strangely this does not affect my kde-nightly, so I have the sinking feeling that this is another Kubuntu thing.

I keep wondering why the gods that be have to change so many rudimentary things. It can't be for "ease of use".

Re: Unable to log out / shutdown / restart

Thanks for your help and suggestions.
I managed to sort out the loss of window titlebars by the 'emerald --replace' method, I doubt it had anything to do with the shutdown/log out/restart problem.

Fintan, I too have found no joy from the 'Session manager' as suggested by The Liquidator.

I will give dibl's suggestion of switching off the desktop effects and compiz-fusion and renaming the .kde folder. I suppose that after a restart the .kde folder will regenerate..... won't it?

Re: Unable to log out / shutdown / restart

To rename .kde you will havwe to do this from either recovery mode->root->startx or a live cd.

Doing that while running your kde session will not have any effect.

It didn't help my log off problems.

kget also sometimes aborts a shutdown. No idea why.
