[SOLVED] Need help with apt-get [SOLVED]

I recently did an install of 8.10 on a new machine that uses a Nvidia 9800 GTX+ video card. When I did, somewhere in the middle of the process, the latest driver for the video card (180.22) showed up in the list, I was able to install it and all worked well until I made a bone head mistake and had to do a reinstall of the OS.

While I was discussing the problem I made for myself on these forums, one poster suggested that the Add/Remove Software tool was not a good way to get new software onto the system and that apt-get was better. My problem now is this - if I don't know the exact name of the package I want to install, how do I tell apt-get to install it? Specifically, where this video driver is concerned, there is obviously a deb package out there for the 180.22 version of the driver, how do I get apt-get to find it?

    Thanks.

      Re: Need help with apt-get

You need to look at http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3099811.0 question 11a and 11b

11a will lead you to "How to install ANYTHING in Ubuntu!" at http://amitech.50webs.com/installing/index.php.html

apt-get is probably no better, it is just different and it depends what you are used to.

The driver you want is probably the one at http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...32_180.22.html - it is a .sh and not a .deb.

According to my recollection you need to be out of graphic mode to install and "Type "sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.22-pkg1.run" to install the driver

        Re: Need help with apt-get

Thanks for all the inputs. The pointer to the apt-cache search command helped me the most. I found the 180.11 driver which seem to work well enough that I think I won't go any further at this time. I'll have to look at the links above to see what they can add to my understanding too.

        Thanks again.
