    8.10 64bit install problems

    Hello!

I am relativly new to Linux, I have been using it for about 2yrs. I can generally fumble my way through most issues either by using google.com/linux or by searching the various forums for answers.

Unfortunatly, I have not been able to locate a resolution to this problem..

    Brand new TigerDirect.ca barebones system:

    XFX GeForce 8200 Mainboard
    AMD X2 64bit 5000+
    3.0GB DDR2 667MHz Crucial Ram
    500GB Hitachi SATA-2 Hard Drive
    nVidia GeForce 8200 (onboard graphics)
XFX nVidia GeForce 8500 (Hybrid Sli enabled)
    LG EIDE DVD R/RW Burner

Was able to install Win Vista Ultimate 64bit with no troubles. Actually, I am kinda impressed with how well it is performing.

When attempting to run either ther live CD or the installation, the same thing happens. I get the Kubuntu splash screen, with the blue bar moving across, only for it to drop to a command prompt with the following on screen:

    [ 0.004000] Aperture beyond 4GB. Ignoring.

This is the only 64bit system I have access to for testing.

I have made previous Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu & Suse install CD's with this drive, no problems with any of the previous burns.

This DVD drive has installed Kubuntu, Ubuntu & Suse previously.

I have tried different brands of blank CD media.

I have tried different ISO burners such as K3B on Xubuntu, MagicISO & ISO Burner on Win Vista 64 & XP 32.

I have not tried to install a 32bit version of Kubuntu.

I have not tried to install Ubuntu (32 or 64) or another distro on this machine.

Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure your Live CD is not for 32bit computers?
that's the only thing I can think of

Yes, I have made sure... but even if it was, a 64bit pc is still able to run 32bit software.

Try a vga=788 boot option, (F6 on the Live CD). It's just a graphics card issue, getting past the splash screen.

OK, boot the Live CD. When it presents the menu, press F6 and enter "vga=788" with no quote marks, then choose to run it off the main menu. Prolly the splash screen will be messed up -- don't worry about that.

There's more about it on FAQ #2 on the link in my signature. If you install the OS, then you'll need to edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and add the boot option to the main boot line, as shown.

                Re: 8.10 64bit install problems

After I select install, I see the following messages:
                aperture beyond 4gb
                bios doesn't leave memory hole
                enable IOMMU

Then a command prompt of sorts appears.
After a short delay, a few loading messages appear and then all is silent at the prompt. I am new to linux, though I am familiar with some command line tricks with grep, etc. What should I do?
If it matters, I do have 8Gb of RAM installed and a Geforce 9800 GT card. Vista is already installed, but a separate 500 Gb SATA drive is reserved for the linux OS.

Before installing, did you run the Live CD? Did it appear to run OK? Audio, Internet, USB stuff -- did you check them out?
