Installation does not get past keyboard layout selection

When trying to install Kubuntu 8.10, after the keyboard layout selection in the installation wizard, I can see a window pop up that looks like ubiquity is scanning my partitions. After this window disappears again, I am returned to the keyboard layout selection but the Back and Next buttons are disabled, only the Quit button is still working.

This happens both if directly selecting Install when booting from the CD as well as when booting the live system and the selecting install.

These are the last entries in /var/log/messages:

In case this has to do with my disk and/or partition table: I am using a SATA disk; here's the partition table, with a SuSE installation on sda4 (which I intended to replace) and hardy on sda3:

    fdisk -l /dev/sda

    Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x82da82da

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 1 3824 30716248+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda2 3825 4967 9181147+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
    /dev/sda3 4968 12328 59127232+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda4 * 12329 19457 57263692+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda5 3825 4589 6144831 b W95 FAT32
    /dev/sda6 4590 4967 3036253+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Re: Installation does not get past keyboard layout selection

I have the impression from the /var/log message that it is getting hung up on the NTFS partition -- it appears to be trying to install there, or resize it, for some reason.

Can you run the Live CD, and run GParted, or do you have a GParted Live CD? If it were me, I'd use GParted to reformat the /dev/sda4 partition so SUSE is cleaned off of it, and then maybe you'll need to use the Kubuntu Alternate Install CD to be able to manually point the partitioner to /dev/sda4 to use for the "/" mount point.

Also, I'm not sure why /dev/sda4 has the "boot" flag set, but if you want to boot Windows on /dev/sda1, I'm pretty sure that it will have to have the boot flag set there. Linux normally doesn't care about the boot flag, as far as I can tell.

Thanks for your answer! The alternate install cd worked without any problems, no need even to clean the suse partition beforehand. Should have thought of that earlier, thanks again!
