Just downloaded the ISO for 8.10 - can't find a checksum from Kubuntu anywhere!

This is really silly. Before I burn a CD I want to verify that the iso image is intact and matches the file kubuntu transmitted to me. The traditional way to do that is to use a checksum string provided by the sender and compare it with the checksum on the file you got. (Sorry for the 101 for those who know this all ready).

But no where on the kubuntu distribution site can I find a checksum, or even any reference to one.

Searching the net shows a number of third party sources, but I don't want to trust third parties on this one. (Oh, and they don't match the checksum I get on my copy)

I want a checksum I can reasonably assume was generated by the original source of the file.

Why would I assume that a site "whyamistilltyping.wordpress.com" had legit checksums? Because it says so?

And I finally found a (mostly) reasonable source of checksums - on the help.ubuntu site:

      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

And the reason checksum or md5 doesn't show up is that they put in in a UbuntuHashes page. Oh well.

Start K3b, tell it you want to burn an iso, point to the downloaded iso file and K3b will check the md5 checksum. You can compare what it shows with those provided by the site I pointed you to. As to why should you trust? You shouldn't - out of hand - but the bogger was/had the same issues you are, and did the searching to find the values, and has made them available for others.

        Let K3b do it's thing.

Sorry, Snowhog - honestly, I wasn't angry with you - but I let my frustration spill out on you.

I've edited my original response (taking out the snide Warez comment - again, sorry) and posted a link to a ubuntu web site with the information.

There should be a sticky on how to find these strings, and a quick tell on why it's important. People new to downloading large (important) files might end up wasting lots of time, or worse, installing a trojan copy.

          Thanks for the reply.
