Install Kubuntu on a new PC

Hi to all (happy new year)

I have used Kubuntu 8.10 on other PCs both dual boot with xp and as stand alone. I have also use Kubuntu 8.04 as above I think they are brilliant and recommend Kubuntu to everyone I know.
Here is the problem, I have searched and not found any answers yet.

I have got a new PC - Acer aspire M3641, Intel Q6600 core 2 Quad, 4Gb Ram, Nvidia GeForce 7100 Graphics,.

when I try to boot from the live cd (a cd I have used on other PCs) the installation stops at "Loading Bluetooth" and will go no further.
If I press the off button the installation starts to shut down then stops at "Stopping Bluetooth".
For additional information I searched for a fix and the thoughts were it is a USB problem.
the fix was to disconnect all USB devices and try again.
    The same result.
another thing just for fun I tried 4 other live distros all failed with various USB errors!!!

I really want kubuntu on my new PC so any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way I am by no means an expert on Linux

    Thanks in advance

Re: Install Kubuntu on a new PC

I just did an installation of Windows and Linux on a new PC yesterday, and was reminded (again) about the vagaries of optical drives and Live CDs. Two different GParted Live CDs that boot perfectly on my own 3 PCs would not boot correctly on the new hardware with a brand new optical drive -- they went most of the way, then dropped to a Busybox prompt. But the Kubuntu Live CD did boot correctly, to my relief.

So I would first suspect some issue with the combination of that Live CD and the optical drive in the new computer. There are a couple of approaches to get at the problem:

    1. Make sure you have observed the "DAO mode, no faster than 4X" burning rules. For example, I happen to have a really cheap Windows CD burning application named "AV Burning Studio" which won't go any slower than 16X, and doesn't offer DAO mode, and it makes a coaster every time I've ever tried it.

    2. If a Live CD made on PC "A" doesn't work, and you have access to a PC "B", try that one and make another Live CD. Sometimes another brand of blank media will get you past the problem, too.

    3. If you happen to have a bootable Live USB stick with burning software, you might be able to actually make a Live CD using the new PC's optical drive. That would improved the chances that it will read the resultant CD.

    Hope this helps.

      Thanks for the reply

Yes I did all the usual cd things and made sure the disk was perfect after it didn't work the first time
However I have found the answer after I made the post here
There is a setting in the BIOS that sets the MOBO up for Windows
I think it changes the IO configuration somehow
I think the Linux kernel doesn't pick this up and gets stuck
Anyway, I now have a fully functioning Kubuntu / Vista PC dual booting with GRUB.
      Both OSs work fine.
I even have the correct graphics card driver for Kubuntu

      Thanks again for the reply
