    Having a bit of trouble upgrading to 8.10

    HI

    Having trouble with 8.10

    Have a dell pc, running 8.04...works a dream. Want to try 8.10. Got the live cd and have to boot it in safe graphics mode as it will not boot otherwise.

    I assume my graphics card ( ati radeon 2400) is the trouble here.

    I would like to use 8.10 and kde4.2 when it is out soon ish but I do not want to install 8.10 if I have to run in safe graphics mode. There is an option discussed earlier about disabling randr settings in system settings under session manager.

    I have tried this under the live cd and unchecked this option but of course when I then reboot the system it reboots the live cd so I guess I must install it ...

    Any ideas or previous experience with this ?

    bump up for air?

    I read here http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...0_oss_3d&num=3

    that amd/ati are renewing drivers for this series of cards but is that what is affecting me upgrading.

    Should I leave installing 8.10 or back up all and sundry and give it a go? Then at least I can reinstall 8.04 if necessary

      Yep, I would say that's most likely too. The backup guess being power management (acpi, apic, etc.).

      If you can get the 8.10 Live CD to boot correctly, with a boot option(s), then it's safe to install it and plan to manually add the same boot option to /boot/grub/menu.lst after installation.

      So, boot your Live CD and press F6 and start trying different options. If it were me, I'd try these first (in sequence):

      xforcevesa
      vga=791
      vga=790
      vga=788
      vga=787
      noapic
      noacpi
      noapic noacpi

      Good luck!
