Installer does not show any partitions

I have 2 hard disks installed on my computer.
When I run the Live CD, Dolphin shows all the partitions that I have on my HDs. However, when I go ahead with the install process, at the begining of the 4th step (partitioning), it does not show any disk or parittion. The whole thing is totally blank.

I read the post by Mondariz (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3100265.0), who was facing similar problem. However, I could not get how he resolved it.

I already have Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 installed on my computer and want to install Kubuntu 8.10 on another partition.

A foolish question, maybe, but have you selected Manual Install and the correct HD?

What aged hippy said is a good question.
Step 4: Select the Manual partitioning method.
Step 5: You should see your partitions.

TestDisk might fix any bad partition table you have.

Re: Installer does not show any partitions

The question might sound foolish, but the problem was real. At the very "Step 4: Select the partitioning method", the window displayed nothing (blank!), so the question of selecting "Guided" or "Manual" did not arise.
However, I found the round-about -- At the time of booting I selected 2nd option just "Install" instead of "Try Kubuntu without changing the system". There it gave me the option to select the partitioning method and the install went smoothly (just completed the install).
Anyways, thanks for trying to help.
Time to experience the new KDE4!

I didn't mean that your question sounded foolish, i meant mine.

I apologise for the misunderstanding, and for not making myself clear.

              Thanks, toad.

... You do realise that once i get the network sorted out (on Kubuntu) i'll probably be here to annoy mislead help people on a regular basis....

I feel embarassed posting here from XP.

Re: Installer does not show any partitions

I'm using Intrepid Ibex now but used Hardy for some time and had that problem on another computer (not mine).
When running the live CD - everything seemed OK, but the install had problems later, but booting from the live CD instead of running it, and the install went perfectly and the system works without problems.

I use the alternate CD - not the desktop - for encryption of /home partition and swap during the installation, so don't have the live CD option.

What you have said and what I've experienced seems to suggest that running the live CD and then installing is not the same as installing directly (booting from the CD).

Never mind.... I guess it was my understanding that was foolish. Anyways, all is well that ends well

Exactly... If I try to install by clicking on the "install" icon on the desktop of the live cd, it does not show any partitioning options. But when I directly installed from cd (2nd option in the boot menu), everything went fine.

Re: Installer does not show any partitions

As you pointed out in your original post, I had similar problems.

I will try to back-track what i did.

Primarily i disconnected my secondary harddrive. I don't know if that is necessary for you, but since i have a SATA and an IDE drive it was somehow confusing Kubuntu.

                    I also ran TestDisk:

                    http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step

As my partition table was incorrect.

Finally I installed Kubuntu by first running the live-cd and installing from the install icon on the desktop. I had problems simply installing from the boot menu.

Hope some of these steps can help you.

I have exactly the same setup... one IDE and another SATA. May be thats why similar problem. Anyways, since I already got the system installed, I am not so very inclined to try the TestDisk. Another problem I face with this two HDs setup is that, the BIOS detects IDE disk on Channel 0 and the SATA on Channel 1. So I have to install grub on the IDE disk even if the OS is installed on SATA.
Do you face similar problem, or have the solution to it?

Re: Installer does not show any partitions

No, I installed Kubuntu with only the SATA drive attached, then re-attached the IDE driver after.

                        This procedure gave no problems.

Re: Installer does not show any partitions

One thing I'd mention to you guys, suppose you have a mixture of drives on your machine (e.g., SATA & IDE). GRUB sees drives the same way BIOS sees them. However, and this is important, the K/Ubuntu installers may not always see the drives "correctly" as BIOS & GRUB see them. That's my experience.

Furthermore, almost always, you can sort it out this way:
Get into a Live Kubuntu CD session.
                          Open Konsole.
                          sudo grub
                          grub> geometry (hd<Press the TAB key now>
(do not type the <, > symbols)
and that should list all your drives as BIOS/GRUB sees them using GRUB notation (hdx,y).
You can explore individual drives using geometry:
                          grub>geometry (hd0)
                          grub>geometry (hd1)
                          etc.

Then, manually , you can install/re-install GRUB anywhere you wish using the command line (sudo grub) from a HDD or from a LIve CD, using standard methods, like these:
How To GRUB Methods - Toolkit
                          http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3081671.0

Problems occur--as you guys have found--when trying to rely on the installer to identify drives correctly. But you can do that task before running the installer. Or, let the installer do its thing (mess up!), then do the manual work to re-install GRUB wherever you wish it to be.
