    Wubi Intrepid install

I have a Wubi install of Intrepid, which I have managed to get doing everything I want it to do.
Is there any way I can either back it up to a bootable disc or drive. to make it into a "proper" dual boot with Vista on my Advent QT5500 laptop?

    Yes, there is

Remastersys is probably the easiest tool for you if you have DVD burner. Basically a point and click exercise and you end up with an installable DVD of your current system.

If you want to find out a little more about other tools available you could use dpkg's dselect feature to get a list of installed packages which you feed into the new install. In addition you'd have to copy your /home directory to achieve same app and KDE behaviour - done.

Feel free to ask questions. For remastersys just google, for the second option I think Rog131 has written a superb how to on this forum (but I haven't got the link ).

Thanks for that. I've downloaded and installed Remastersys, and I'll give it a bash. I'll leave the Wubi install in place until I'm sure it works.

        Welcome to the free world

I for one am very interested in issues you come up against and find a wubi install (somewhat customised) made into an installable live CD very exciting

Please let us know how you get on. Any difficulties you encounter are also of interest.

Have you got plans about your partitioning?

Haven't done it yet. Got caught up in pre Christmas rush.
Machine (Advent QT5500 laptop with Intel T5500 Core2Duo) has an 80Gb hard drive.
I was thinking 25-30 for Kubuntu and leave the rest for Vista. Does that seem reasonable? Happy to bow to experience.

Sounds fine. Have a look here: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3099811.0 - item #5 for further guidance.

                Re: Wubi Intrepid install

Oh dear. I appear to have killed my WUBI install. It loads as far as the KDE password screen, but when I input the PW, it gives a shake, goes black for a few seconds and goes back to the password invite.
I have tried the change password as root, but that doesn't do anything either. I'm left looking at the PW screen. I'm having to use Microsoft's folly to write this. Can I use the live cd for a repair install?

                  Re: Wubi Intrepid install

Not to worry. You have prolly run out of space. Search this forum for stuff like "KDE fails to start" and stuff like that.

                  Top causes are:
                  1) no space left
                  2) no space left
                  3) borked ~/.kde directory

                  Report back

                    Re: Wubi Intrepid install

                    What happened was:
I did the Remastersys backup, and it seemed to burn to DVD
I had an "install" icon in the desktop box (KDE4). I started the install with the disc in the drive, and got as far as the partition screen, it didn't want to do anything for ages, it was getting late and I was working the next day, so I hit the CANCEL button.
                    Bad call.
The screen flashed a few times, I got a "Fatal Error" message, and it all went black.
I had to switch off with the power button, and haven't been able to get through the password/splash screen since.
                    A good old-fashioned meatware problem.

                      Re: Wubi Intrepid install

Ouch! I think there is a message there in remastersys somewhere saying: Do not interrupt this process or remastersys will turn your computer into pulp.

I am impressed that it has kept its promise...

Seriously, it does a whole lot of switching users and groups. I reckon your best bet now is to boot into the rescue system and attempt to log in. If that is possible, try to do a
                      Code:
                      sudo adduser
Kubuntu will ask you for a new user name, a whole lot of other stuff and a password. Once done, attempt a reboot and see whether you can login under the new user...

Did it work? If so, your KDE will look like it did on the original kubuntu. This can be fixed

Have just wiped the Wubi install.
I'm just going to start again only this time keep a note of what I'm doing as I go along. Adding repos, particularly the restricted files etc, the programs and drivers added for printer and scanner etc.
I really like the Kubuntu experience and KDE, and I'm just annoyed with myself that I blew it up.
Still, it costs me nothing but time.

Shame, but you know this will be a cleaner, better install and you'll learn along the way
