Consequences of changing a video card

I set up a friend's computer to run Kubuntu Hardy. Then he changed his video card. After that, I couldn't get into the graphic desktop. All I saw was text stuff on the screen. I probably could have fixed the problem from the graphic desktop, but of course I didn't have it.

I thought that maybe there was something I could do from an alternate console, but I couldn't figure out anything, and I also couldn't get into superuser mode because I didn't have a working root password. As far as I can remember I never specified a root password as distinct from the primary user password (which I have). That also raised the issue of how to recover a lost primary password.

Under OpenSuSE the installation CD can also be used for system rescue and reconfiguration operations, but it isn't clear how to do that with the Kubuntu installation CD. I can start up a freestanding Kubuntu system, of course, but that doesn't provide any reasonably simple way of modifying the existing Kubuntu system.

When you get into a console try using sudo with the commands and when asked for a password use the normal user password.
