    ksmserver error

I just reinstalled Kubuntu 8.10 but it won't boot up. I get an error from kmserver and then it just drops back to the login screen. Ironically, I reinstalled because after I did an update, I couldn't book because of the same error. I thought I'd solve it by rebooting.

I did a Google search and found several post about the problem. I've installed and reinstalled several things because of what I read but still no luck.

    Any ideas?

So you are getting to the KDM login screen, but after you type in your password and press enter, you are returned to the login screen?

I get the same problem with the login. It drops me right back into the command prompt login. I just reinstalled my system and started updating each packet one by one. Everything went fine until I got to the KDM update. Now it won't let me log into the GUI environment.

      I'm running the AMD64 system.

Yes, I get an error message. It tries to start booting but only makes the first image visible while booting. It stops booting and gives me an error message about ksmserver. When I click okay on the box it goes back to the login screen.

I have Ubuntu installed so I do have a useable system but I'd prefer Kubuntu.

Is it the Xsession or the kdeinit error?

I got the same problem. I have updated Kubuntu form 8.04 to 8.10. After booting, I get to the login screen. Then I fill in my password and the animated 'logging in' bar pops up. Only the first three items appear and after the 'globe'-item appeard, it hangs. When I then click or tap a key, I get the message "couldn't write to /home/"username"/.ICEauthority" or something like this and after that the same ksmserver error as posted here. Clicking again returns me back to the login screen.

Only sollution for me now is to go into the options tab at the login screen, start a console, log in there and then start x. Then it logs in without any problems.

But why can't it just log in via the login schreen?

I don't know. After I login, it starts loading and the first of those little images shows then it stops loading and I get an error message that says, "Could Not Start KSMServer Check Your Installation" Then there is a box for me to click on that says "Okay." When I click on that, it goes back to the login screen.

Are there commands I could try if I boot into a terminal?

Yesterday I messed up my system in similar way. I used guidedog and guarddog with sudo instead with kdesudo. Next thing I knew I had problems connecting to DCOP. So I logged out and tried to log in again with no success (just like you - the animation was stuck on the globe). I checked .xsession-errors and found out about the .ICEauthority permission problem. As it turned out sudo changed the owner of the file from myuser:mygroup to root:root. I killed KDM, changed owner and group with chown and everything went back to normal.
