got some error about x-terminal-emulator missing. I have this on three machines, and not one will go into failsafe. kind of ironic really...lol they all act a little different. the one at work just loops back to the login, as does my laptop. the other machine gives me ths error.

I have the same thing; it seems that the konsole package doesn't install an x-terminal-emulator soft-link even though it satisfies the package dependency. I just installed rxvt which does install that soft-link, but there are many others that will do instead (search for x-terminal-emulator in aptitude). Although I haven't checked it, I'm pretty sure that this will now permit a failsafe login.
Until you've got an alternative installed you can always press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a console login.
