Anyone face this problem yet, or have a clue how to make it work?

K Menu > System Settings > Advanced > Login Manager > Users

Click on your user name. Under User Images click on the blank box below User: <default>
Either select from one of the 'canned' images or click on Browse... and navigate to where you have an image you want to use.

Consider your venture into the land of Linux (and Kubuntu 8.10 specifically) as taking up residence in a new house. You need to explore - to open doors, drawers, and cupboards to see what there.

i've been everywhere in the past couple of weeks... been a lot of fun, and i've been on the very edge of reinstall many times...lol

Reinstalling should be the action of last resort - after all other options have been exhausted. Do not fear asking a question, even if you feel it 'silly.' If you don't know, ask. In most cases, the answer is out there.
