Kubuntu 8.04 upgrade to 8.10 gone bad

Like a lot of people I'm having a lot of trouble here with the 'upgrade'
First I had to modify grubs menu.lst and add rootdelay=90 to get it to boot!

Now it comes up OK ish an I can log in as myself under KDE but it wont keep my settings, I cant switch to another user - says GDM needs to be running. If I try to configure the loginwindow it say GDM needs to be running.
If I log in as a different user under GDM the screen flashes and logout leaves to a blank screen and nothing works.
Any idea how to fix this without a reinstall?

GDM? Did you have a Ubuntu (Gnome) 8.04 that you upgraded to Kubuntu (KDE) 8.10?
