    Okay. Have you tried the sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm since the changes?
    Windows no longer obstructs my view.

        Given that kdm is installed - as reported by sudo apt-get install --simulate kdm - the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm is supposed to allow you to select the default login manager. What does happen when you issue the command?

          Nothing that can be observed. I press return, enter the password, the system runs for 3 or 4 seconds, ant the CLI prompt re-appears. I do not get a chance to select anything.

            Well, something is afoot here. So let me ask: Was this a clean install of 8.10, or was it an upgrade? If an upgrade, was it from 8.04 running KDE remix or from 8.04 that had KDE 4.0 added along side of KDE 3.5.x?

              I upgraded. I had also installed KDE 4 prior to upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10

                  Sorry, but I'm at a loss as to what else to suggest here. If you can afford to wait, others (hopefully) will chime in with insight I don't have. But, if that isn't an option, well, there's always the infamous reinstall. :P

                    Is it possible to uninstall the KDM and reinstall the new version. It looks like this is a problem related to upgrading KDE 3 to KDE 4 (prior to release of 8.10). That is why it keeps looking for the kdm-kde4 files. Maybe...??

                    Any help is appreciated.

                            Sorry, but I'm at a loss as to what to suggest. All I can say, is that if I were experiencing what you are, I would be tempted to just say screw it and do a complete reinstall - formatting both the root and home partitions. I'd copy any important documents to another drive or thumb drive first.

                              Would it be possible to uninstall both (kdm & kdm-kde4) and then only install the most recent without reinstalling the distribution? I'm trying to get this done the easy way.

                              If this is possible how would I force the removal of both packages and install the kdm as new?

                                Forgive me if I am way off beam here, but have you tried to upgrade direct from gutsy to intrepid i.e by-passed Hardy? If so, that's not generally a good thing to do. (Re-read - I see you didn't do that)

                                Assuming kdm (which is the name for the kdm in intrepid) is broken, it's also reasonable to assume that kde is likely to be damaged too. Short of a reinstall you could try gdm - you will still be able to boot into kde if kde isn't damaged. In your console type sudo apt-get install gdm

                                What output do you get? Hopefully it will be a prompt to gdm and a load of gnome packages. If you download them, you ought to be able to boot into a gui (probably gnome) but you will at least have a working system and can then set about fixing your non-working kde or kdm. You then have a great chance of fixing it

                                Give it a whirl and let us know what happens.
