Install from live CD OK, but not from alternate CD

Hello fellow Linux users. I come to you with a riddle today. I have a brand new HP 6710b laptop with X3100 integrated Intel graphics and of course the first order of business is to get rid of that win*** junk on my drive. Since it is a laptop I want to encrypt all of my data, using dm-crypt in the alternate cd.

However, when I boot (K)ubuntu 8.04/8.10 (x86 or x64) alternate CD I get the question about the languague and then I click on "Install Kubuntu". The CD goes for a few seconds and then I am staring at a black screen. The screen for setting up the machine never comes up. The alternate CDs work fine in other PCs I own.

When I boot from a (K)ubuntu 8.04/8.10 (x86 or x64) live CD everything works fine and installs without a hitch. No problems, except that I cannot use encryption.

Any ideas why the alternate CDs down't want to run?

    Does not work:
    Kubuntu 8.04 x86 alternate
    Kubuntu 8.04 x64 alternate
    Kubuntu 8.10 x86 alternate
    Kubuntu 8.10 x64 alternate
    Ubuntu 8.04 x86 alternate
    Ubuntu 8.04 x64 alternate
    Ubuntu 8.10 x86 alternate
    Ubuntu 8.10 x64 alternate

    Works:
    Any live CD

    EDIT:
Debian Etch installer does not work either...
