    Static/noise over shutdown splash?

Is anyone else getting this? It does not seem to be causing any problems (so far) but it is irritating.

I am using Kubuntu 8.10 as a dual-boot with Vista on a HP Pavillion dv9628nr laptop.

I am a little confused...static/noise implies a problem with the hardware which is transmitting or carrying a radio frequency know as (RF)...do you have a more detailed description of the problem?

      ReVisual) Static/noise over shutdown splash?

I know what it implies, but I could not think of a better description.

Whenever I see the shutdown splash, I also see an overlay of static or noise, what older TV viewers used to call "snow". I see spots.

This static is not visible on the bootsplash.

As I stated before, it does not seem to be hurting anything. It is just irritating. But it may be a sign that something is wrong.

        Re: Static/noise over shutdown splash?

Nobody else in the whole, wide world is getting a similar problem? There is no fuzziness, snow, static, noise---call it whatever you want---on the bootsplash. This problem also is NOT on the LiveCD.

Unfortunately, starting over from scratch may not be a viable option...my wife has made her feelings clear about spending time with her or spending time with my laptop...

        Any ideas? Please?

What Graphics card does your laptop have?

Do you get this problem at any other time?

Have similar issue at my end too; very much like heavy electrical interference on a TV screen.

It is only during shutdown and often goes away after a brief moment. Does not in any manner affect performance; just the annoyance factor. >

Mobo here is an Intel with onboard video. Other than this v8.10 (64 bit) works flawlessly.

Try going into system settings and turning off RandR

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M. The only time I see this problem is at shutdown.

Turning off RandR did not seem to effect annything.

                  Jim

My Laptop has an intel card like that of BeepBeep and had an annoying flicker which turning off RandR greatly helped.

Sorry it's not worked for you, so I suspect that is an intel issue.

I don't have much of a clue about Nvdia, but assume you have the correct drivers installed?

Thanks but just where exactly in Sys Settings is it?

                      kmenu/system settings

select the advanced tab and choose service manager (I think!). I say "I think" because this would now appear to have disappeared (I'm using KDE 4.2 beta). That was the option recommended here for getting rid of a flicker that affected intel cards.

I note that you and Jim don't have the same cards but do share something in common - 64 bit.

Can you pinpoint it to any event (say an update) or has it done this since install?

In KDE 4.1.3, look here: KMenu->System Settings->Advanced->Service Manager

I've had this problem since my first clean Intrepid install. I have since reinstalled twice, once with the alternate-cd and once more with a LiveCD from a different mirror (testing the assumption that there was a problem with the mirror I usually use). In 3 installs, from 2 different mirrors, this problem has always been there.

Oh dear, another video issue it would seem.

I would think about filing a bug report.

Not really; it appeared to occur from day one after I upgraded to v8.10 from 8.04.

If it's a video issue, why don't I see the problem when using the LiveCD itself?
