Can you be more specific? What actions did you take exactly, and what do you mean by "system freezes?"

I logged out of the session instead of shutting down or restarting. The KDE session shut down and the screen went black, a series of commands shutting down various services appear and the system stops. Pressing keys does not work. The screen stays just as it froze up.
Would you try again, and when at the "froze up" stage, press and hold the Alt+SysReq keys, and while still holding those two keys, press and release in order, the following keys: r, s, e, i, u, b
This is the "magic key sequence" that will allow the continuation of a normal system shutdown when it appears that the system has become frozen.

Ah. I don't have any experience with multiple users - I'm the only one on my laptop - so I don't have an answer to your question. Or am I incorrect, and you don't have a second user session running that you are logging out of?

I'm sure that I am the only user logged on (I have re-started the system and re-created the problem). The screen (After the system freeze) looks like the normal text (not GUI) version of a running script output to the screen (on start up or shut down) and does not respond to key presses or mouse movement.
May I ask why you opt for Leave > Logout instead of Leave > Shutdown?

Okay. What does your system do if instead, you use the Leave > Switch User instead?

After the upgrade, the login screen was Ubuntu. I had to change the default login screen. Is it possible the Gnome Desktop Manager is default and I am just starting a KDE session? If so, how do I change from the default Gnome to KDE?
