When I am logging in, the chime that I think starts out rather nicely, is not fully playing. It craps out about a second into the chime. Does anybody know how I can fix this?
It's an already commented on issue. Not sure why, but my belief is that another startup process is stepping on the sound daemon. It's a minor annoyance - it doesn't actually affect the system in any negative way. I'm sure it will be identified and fixed in some future updates.

I had that phenomenon from the time I installed 8.10 Beta until last weekend or early this week (I'm not sure which day I noticed that it's playing the whole thing). Apparently a recent update fixed it -- I have no idea which one, or how.
I have the same problem too... the opening sound only could be heard for a second.... until some recent upgrade, after which it doesn't sound at all anymore (and I didn't disable it!).
Yes, it's annoying. But, it has no effect on the operation of the OS - sound still does function. It probably will get fixed - some day - so until then, let's get past it.

I had this issue when I was using kde 4.1.x, since I have been using 4.2 it's always played the full sound. Mind you some may not find that an improvement
