This is the sixth kubuntu 8.10 disk i've burned counting previous daily builds. I have the same problem as with all other iterations of intrepid. Whether Live Install or Install directly from disk, whenever the KDE desktop attempts to load, usually right before the "K" fades in it hangs. Hardy worked alright, but I wanted the native KDE 4.1 experience, also upgrades from 8.04 go badly too. I've got an onboard intel 845 gpu in my old dell. I want a clean KDE 4 install and wanted to use kubuntu very much. Anything I can do to avoid openSUSE?

Re: Cannot get past KDE 4 loading screen.
From the 8.10 Release Notes:
Hangs with desktop effects on Intel 830MG and 845G video cards
There is a bug in the Intel video driver for the older intel 830 and 845 integrated video cards that are used on laptops like the IBM R30. Desktop effects with compiz will not work on those chips and will freeze the system. For new installations, please install using the safe graphics mode (press F4 in the startup screen) on these systems and disable desktop effects via System -> Preferences -> Appearance, clicking on "Visual effects" and choosing "None".Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Re: Cannot get past KDE 4 loading screen.
Thank you all
Re-installing via Live CD in safe graphics mode and disabling desktop effects worked- however attempting to get a better resolution than 640x480; I changed the driver option in xorg.conf from"vesa" to "intel" and now can't get back in.
Any ideas on how to edit xorg.conf before kdm freaks out?
Any hope to get above the hard-on-the-eyes resolution of 640x480, (my native monitor resolution is 1280x1024), without displayconfig-gtk and no change from "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xor

You can rename the current file with:
Code:mv xorg.conf xorg.conf_INTEL
Code:mv xorg.conf~ xorg.conf
Code:shutdown -r now

Re: Cannot get past KDE 4 loading screen.
Thank you Snowhog,
I did not know about recovery mode, (Esc while Startup).
Back to a full KDE 4.1 desktop at 640x480
I guess now I just hope for an intel driver patch to get me back to the resolution I had with Hardy.
