    Random Logouts on 8.10

    The computer randomly logs out, without any kind of warning, goes to a blank screen and then sometimes the words "checking battery power" flash on screen before returning to the login. It doesn't shut down, just logs out. So far the computer has been handling the system very well and has not been taxed heavily at all; nor has it ever been unplugged. So I can't understand why it would close all programs and log out like this without any kind of warning.

    I was away from the computer the last time it happened but here are the system logs from when I believed it occured:

    2008-11-03 11:10:02 r50e-kubuntu /USR/SBIN/CRON[6028] (root) CMD ([ -x /usr/sbin/update-motd ] && /usr/sbin/update-motd 2>/dev/null)
    2008-11-03 11:10:47 r50e-kubuntu console-kit-daemon[4973] WARNING: Unable to activate console: No such device or address
    2008-11-03 11:10:48 r50e-kubuntu kdm[5655] X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
    2008-11-03 11:10:49 r50e-kubuntu acpid client connected from 6208[0:0]
    2008-11-03 11:10:53 r50e-kubuntu kdm_greet[6223] Cannot set locale. Translations will not work.
    2008-11-03 11:10:55 r50e-kubuntu kdm_greet[6223] Cannot open default user face

    I'm afraid I'm rather new at this and don't understand much from those logs but if anyone can give me some ideas how to fix it, I'd be very grateful.

    You didn't specify, and I'll not assume, so ... Desktop or laptop PC?

          I had similar behaviour. Are you using nvidia driver?
          Aparently the situation was resolved today when I did the installation again from the script of NVIDIA after that I updated my BIOS.

            I'm not using Nvidia, my graphics is onboard my pentium m.

            The solution was to turn off effects under System Settings > Desktop > Effects

            No more random logout crashes
