    Basic - Wallpapeers

I DL'd new walppaers for the desktop background from the desktop settings app. I DL'd many that converted to"uninstall' in the wallpaper menu. NONE of them appear in the settings window as options to change the desktop wallpaper. Big bug.

        Re: Basic - Wallpapeers

The problem I have with getting new wallpapers is that I keep getting a "cannot change because do not have permission" error. When I go to the /usr/share/wallpaper file area and click properties I see nothing about "permissions" much less how to change them. How do I change the permission to get new wallpapers?

          Re: Basic - Wallpapeers

One way to do it is to put your favourite wallpapers in a directory maybe in the home or the desktop directory, and set the desktop background to use an image from there.

          It works well for me.

I am getting more and more confused. I got the image I want to use a background and put it "desktop".
I searched and searched for the command or whatever it is called to change the background but can't find it. I found "appearance" and "display" in the system settings, but they had nothing about changing the background. At least nothing I could recognize as being about changing the background. I looked the wallpaper subfolder in the root area but could find nothing about changing the background.

            Where am I going wrong?

Right-click on the desktop ->Desktop Settings.

Not sure what the problem is, as it works for me.

                Right-clicked on the desktop.
                Selected Desktop Settings...
                Clicked on New Wallpaper...
Clicked Install on a wallpaper I liked and waited for the download to complete.
                Clicked the Close button.
Clicked the Picture selection bar, chose the wallpaper I downloaded/installed. It showed in the preview window.
Clicked on Apply and the new wallpaper was applied to the desktop.

                It works.

Thanks Snowhog. Never in a million years would I have figured on clicking "open space" would be effective.

                    Re: Basic - Wallpapeers

This illustrates one of the deficiencies in KDE 4.1.2 vs KDE 3.5.x. In KDE 3.5.x you had more items in System Settings, and, you had access via Alt+F2 to kcontrol which provided access to even more settings control.

So now you know how to change your desktop wallpaper. Again, and has been said many, many times, with Linux, there is (almost) always more than one way to get something done.
