    Kubuntu 8.10 and gfxmenu

Using the built in boot loader tool of the system settings, I am not able to get the Grub menu to display my gfxmenu image file. I have it clearly defined in the menu.lst. The gfxmenu is stored in my grub folder. It does show in the background section of the Boot Loader interface, but when I reboot, I get a standard grub menu without any background.

I checked and double checked. It should work. It does work when I use Mandriva or OpenSuse or PCLinuxOS. But I am having a little war with Kubuntu 8.10. I have a clean installation from new released CD and all the new updates.

Is this a bug or am I having a twilight zone moment?

Just a thought.... is Intrepid the default boot OS on your system?

You mentioned Mandriva, OpenSuse and PCLinuxOS, if one of those is the default boot OS, i'm pretty sure you will have to do it from there.

      Re: Kubuntu 8.10 and gfxmenu

I just went a round with the new Grub menu editor. Here's what I learned (or think I learned):

      1. The menu editor gives you the impression that you can just click the browse button, browse to any appropriately-formatted image file on your system, click it, and be done. WRONG. The image file still has to be located in /boot/grub/splashimages/, and it still has to be in that foo.xpm.gz format.

      2. If you set a "background" color, it is on top of the image, so don't do that -- leave it blank.

      3. Grub2 is sitting in the repository waiting to be selected and installed. I resisted the temptation, today -- I've already rebooted 8 or 10 times. :P

So, with a file parked in /boot/grub/splashimages/ and no background color set, I'm getting the splash image that I intended. Too bad it's so boring ..... but, we digress.

If anyone has any further insights into this, feel free to pitch in.

I've only recently acquired the ability to hack customise the Grub menu, there is a handy guide here: http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p15.htm

I've had some fun with it in the past:

I have to look up the recipe for the image file on that rutgers site every time I use gimp to make a new one.

Thanks to all for the info. I do know how to customize a grub menu and I am trying to get gfxmenu backgound, not a Splash Image. I stored the cpio image in the "/boot/grub/" folder.

Kubuntu 8.10 is on my main drive (hda2), while the other OSes are on an external usb drive that I can plug when I want to test them.

I just wonder if there not something wrong with the 8.10 boot loader. I also noticed that the last line of the menu gets removed by magic when I build the boot loader... "configfile (hd1,10)/boot/menu.lst".

            Strange indeed.

Could anyone use the boot loader of 8.10 including a gfxmenu file (cpio format)?
