X Problem when Upgrading to 8.10!!

I have been looking forward to using 8.10 for months now, but my upgrade has not gone well. First, the downloads hung, and when I tried to upgrade again nothing happened. After a reboot, I could not get an xserver. However, I used command line to do a full upgrade, and things seemed to work well.

But now my xserver won't start. I tried doing sudo startx and I got Rgbpath not being a valid keyword in the the Files section. So I commented that out. But then I tried again it said that it could not load the modules freetype, v41, or nvidia, because the modules did not exist.

I would really appreciate any help on this. I am very stuck because I have no way of starting X and now my laptop is pretty much useless!!

I have attached my xorg.conf file, as well as Xorg.0.log.1 (when it complains about Rgbpath) and Xorg.0.log2 (when it complains about the modules not being present). I had to add .txt so it would let me attach them.

Have you tried rebooting into the recovery mode?

Firstly choose the command line option and do

    sudo dpkg --configure -a

That should fix any dodgy software installations

    Then Try startx

If that doesn't work then take the recovery mode option of "fix X"

    Any joy?

I tried repairing the packages and fixing x. It wrote a new xorg.conf file using the vesa drivers, but it comes up with a similar error message:

Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)

        UDATE:

So I think that somehow my nvidia drivers were unloaded completely during the upgrade. I loaded the nvidia-glx-177 series drivers, and that seems to have helped a bit.

I can now get a logini screen (resolution is all messed up but it is a start). However, kwin crashes at login.

Any new thoughts on what to do next?

You are most likely correct there. Seems to have happened to several folks, myself included.
(In my case, my system came back after installing the proprietary driver again. )

I guess all we can really do is wait for an update/fix.
(I'm still getting minor graphics glitching here and there.)

Were you still able to log in? Did kdm or kwin give you any problems?

I was able to log in via recovery. (Just skip the repair tools... they don't fix a darn thing for this problem... and continue to boot - first option). Worked for me... didn't for some others here.

                GETTING SOMEWHERE!

I was able to reinstall kwin and kdm and now I am logged in to KDE4! Joy.

BUT there are still some resolution problems, amarok is complaining about something, and something else will still come up, I am sure.

But if you have problems with the xserver, I recommend trying the above approach.

Try modprobe nvidia...when things weren't even installed it said so.
