    Can't upgrade "command not found" kubuntu-8.10 alternate-i386.iso

    Hi.

    Running Kubuntu 8.4

    Downloaded Kubuntu-8.10 alternate-i386.iso

Successfully burned to CD (I think)

Started to follow directions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...grades/Kubuntu

    First line of directions says:

Upgrade to 8.10 with an alternate CD start with:

    1) Insert the alternate CD, open it in a new window, open the Run Command dialog by pressing Alt+F2. Type kdesudo "/cdrom/cdromupgrade" in the command box and press the OK button.
    under that this img:

    [img width=400 height=187]http://www.kubuntu.org/~jriddell/8.10-upgrade/upgrade1.png[/img]

THE TWO COMMAND DIALOGUES ARE DIFFERENT. One says kdesudo "/cdrom/cdromupgrade", the other says kdesudo media/cdrom/cdromupgrade

Neither commands work. "COMMAND NOT FOUND".

    So: Question.

How do I upgrade from 8.4 to 8.10 using the alternate CD?

    I looked at the site.

    /cdrom/cdromupgrade points to /media/cdrom/cdromupgrade

on my ibex, which is dual boot with hardy, cdrom points to cdrom0

so use /media/cdrom0/cdromupgrade (look at yours to see what you have)

it could be different on yours. I tried this last time with 7.10 to 8.04 and it didn't work, so I did a fresh install of 8.04
This time, I left hardy and added ibex on other partitions so now have both running well.

Just tried that command. Didn't work. >

According to Konqueror (I don't use Dolphin) the CD is located at media:/scd1

When I copy and paste the file to this comment field, it is this:

      file:///media/Kubuntu 8.10 i386/cdromupgrade

I've tried a combination on both of these and nothing seems to work so far.

Are "Sudo", "Kdesudo" or "kdesu" interchangeable?

No, not exactly. "sudo" is for command line commands only. "kdesu" and "kdesudo" are for in-KDE package execution commands, like kate, adept-manager, nvidia-settings, etc. "kdesudo" was introduced in Hardy, IIRC, and is for use in the new release as well.

If you have two optical drives in your machine, make sure there's nothing in the second one. Maybe try your CD in both.

Does Dolphin show the CD icon when you insert the CD and give it a minute to mount?

The DVD drive was empty when I tried the commands.

The icon which appeared once the CD went in was not a Dolphin icon. I've taken a screenshot of my desktop with the CD icon on the left hand side of the page. Here it is.

I've also taken a screenshot of the system settings. That might help you work out what is going on. Here it is.

The CD icon on the desktop looks right, but I don't like that "disabled" label on your System Settings screen.

I haven't opened "Disk and Filesystems" in a very long time -- guess I learned not to trust it in the Edgy & Feisty days, and still don't.

Can you copy and paste your /etc/fstab file into a post?

I don't know whether it makes a difference, but my optical drive works perfectly and here's the fstab line for it:

                Code:
                /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
Since I can't come up with a brilliant solution, maybe you can try editing your mount options to read the same as mine, and restart the system. Since you've already posted, you can always change it back if we make it worse. :P

The other thing is, where's the second optical drive? That should be /dev/scd1 in /etc/fstab -- did you omit it, or is it missing in action?
