    Re: Boot issue

the acpi power management still seems to work. if i hit the power button, it turns itself off, without holding it in for a hard reset. the darn system keeps teasing me with the desktop though, and it's getting on my nerves. i'm at a loss. it seems somewhat related to the length of time i watch it booting.

It would not hurt to experiment with a higher setting, if it's available.

        Re: Boot issue

I'm in virtually the same boat as best I have gathered from reading along. The only twist I can add is that I'm able to boot and use Kubuntu in recovery mode. It just won't load (locks up etc.) in standard mode.

I've tried just about everything suggested here. (Actually ran the recovery tools like XFix right off since they were there.) It said something about a warning on an "xorg" file and gave the location of the backup. The broken package fixer also keeps flagging a handful of packages to uninstall... It seems there is at least one "security update" that keeps failing to download when it asks about downloading as well.

I am frankly ready to do a clean install of 8.10 (I just knew upgrading from 8.04 would be an issue... Just had "that feeling".) However, I'm dual booting with XP and scared of dealing with GRUB and possibly having to rebuild the MBR.

Not sittin' pretty here at all at the moment. My system has no reason for RAM on the video card to be an issue either. (ATI Radeon X850 Pro)

no real solution, but you can safely reinstall grub - of course it makes a LOT OF SENSE to copy your existing and working /boot/grub/menu.lst file for reference

            well shoot...

I wish I could atleast use the recovery mode, but even here it just bounces back to the login screen.

Think I'll try a clean install, and see what happens. Unless anyone can suggest something else to try.

              Re: Boot issue

Well, this morning I just blew everything away (rebuilt MBR, formatted second hard drive which housed Linux, and did fresh install of 8.10) and absolutely nothing has changed.

              Here's my n00b theory...

The graphics card drivers for ATI/Nvidia et al aren't working well/playing nicely with 8.10. The system is automatically reverting to standard driver and this is what is causing the crappy "lock-ups" (it's actually just video corruption). This would explain why even a fresh install of Ibex did nothing for me.

I'm going to try to install the proprietary ATI/AMD driver here in a minute, reboot and see what happens.

Update: Installing the driver went really slow and seemed to hang at start. Rebooting...

thinking about going back to 8.04. i've been playing with it all morning, and no luck. disabled just about everything i could in the bios, and nothing. it just keeps hanging, which seems to be a function of time more than anything else. frustrated as hell.

                  Re: Boot issue

May I ask what type of motherboard you have? My wife actually asked me to get rid of Windows and install Kubuntu...what a joy! But no matter what version of Linux I tried to install I had lockups. After much investigating it ended up that her motherboard (asus m2a-vm) is very finicky and despite several hopeful suggestions, I was simply unable to get it to work.

                    Re: Boot issue

it's an intel motherboard. don't remember the model number. i was running fine on 8.04, except for a slight glitch in my file associations with pdf's, which i eventually made into a bigger problem, until i eventually udpgraded into a huge problem... lol

                      Hold yer horses, pilgrim. :P

Reinstalling the proprietary ATI driver appears to have worked like a charm.

Bottom Line: It appears as though upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 causes the proprietary video driver for some cards to stop working. This defaults the system to the Ubuntu/Kubuntu video driver which is actually what is causing the issue(s). A manual reinstall of the proprietary video driver should fix you up. (It's been "forever" since I did it manually, so don't ask me how. Let one of these non-n00bs hook you up. LOL)

did you download a linux version from somewhere?

                          Re: Boot issue

The way i discovered to install ATI drivers is to open Synaptic, and search for ATI.

It will even install the tray tools bit if you ask it to.

This was the only way i could get the display to remain the size i set it to.

An installer, similar to Adept, but i find it more useable, at least, on the KDE 4 desktop.

                              Get Adept to install it.

Synaptic is the default GUI package manager in Ubuntu (or should I say Gnome). Since you're using Kubuntu (KDE manager - not Gnome) you would most likely have Adept package manager instead of Synaptic. (Though some folks running KDE still install Synaptic and use that as Adept has "had some issues" at times.)

FWIW, after several reboots I'm still up and running. I get a little black screen action just before the login screen, but at least I do get a login screen and nothing "freezes" once I'm in. I am noticing a little graphics corruption on some menus (moving around in Konqueror right now, for example) but it's minor.
