Add these to your source list and just upgrade OOo 2.4 to 3.0 using Adept...

      Code:
      deb [url]http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu[/url] intrepid main
      deb-src [url]http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu[/url] intrepid main

        nVidia "legacy" video support

The 71 and 96 series of proprietary nVidia drivers, as provided by the nvidia-glx-legacy and nvidia-glx packages in Ubuntu 8.04, are not compatible with the X.Org included in Ubuntu 8.10. Users with the nVidia TNT, TNT2, TNT Ultra, GeForce, GeForce2, GeForce3, and GeForce4 chipsets are affected and will be transitioned on upgrade to the free nv driver instead. This driver does not support 3D acceleration.

Users of other nVidia chipsets that are supported by the 173 or 177 driver series will be transitioned to the nvidia-glx-173 or nvidia-glx-177 package instead. However, unlike drivers 96 and 71, drivers 173 and 177 are only compatible with CPUs that support SSE (e.g. Intel Pentium III, AMD Athlon XP or higher). Systems with older CPUs will also be transitioned to the nv driver on upgrade.
What does this mean? Is NVIDIA goding to provide new binary drivers for the new xorg? Or are we going to have to get stuck in the past? Anyone knows?

        Thanks!
        For the record:

        1. A Ubuntu dev told me in ubuntuforums that they do not know if/when NVIDIA will release new binary drivers for hte new xorg. My guess is yes (they always did), and I'll wait for that to happen.

        2. I just tried the live CD for the RC, and I had issues with my DHCP connection (there is some mention in the release notes of issues with some wired connections - I thought the issues was only with the static ones). So, I couldn't even try the nvidia drivers, and decided to wait

In general, even if you upgrade, I think it is wise to try the live-cd before taking the plunge, and generally speaking, unless you want to contribute to the development of feel like playing around, it's always better to wait a couple weeks, maybe a month after the release. Then upgrade. And say thank you to the brave souls to take the plunge early and help iron things out :-)

        My 2 cts!

Unfortunately, the live CD doesn't always give an accurate picture of compatibility. I've done several installs where things were broken to various degrees on the live CD, but worked after doing the full install.

There were three laptops that I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on recently that were like this. One wouldn't even load the live CD but worked fine after installing. If you have all your data fully backed up and don't mind taking the time to do a real install, it is worth a shot to see if some of the stuff works better, especially after installing all the updates.

I have updated to RC and I really like it. Especially quick access. As I posted in one other post
I inherited some errors that I had in my HH but all in all it's good.
Only I really hope that folder view and lock / log out would be repaired a bit. My folder view got bigger after upgrade to RC (I used KDE4 on HH) and lock log out have computer icons instead the lock and power off button. That's the only thing bothering me.
I did experience some difficulties with OOo2.4 but I recently upgraded to OOo3 and didn't experience any difficulties.
                So yeah it looks nice.
I thought I'll do the clean install of II but I'll reconsider this as the RC automaticly removed KDE3 and most of kde3 applications.
I'm magnet for errors, problems and bugs...

Primoz: I read a bit ago someone having issues with the icons, they renamed .kde4 -> .kde4_old and logged-in again and fixed the issue. Hope this helps.

                    Thanks, but it didn't work...
I think I'll just load a icons theme from KDE-look and install it.

                      Re: Kubuntu 8.10 it is!

Intrepid no longer uses the .kde4 folder at all. All your settings are in .kde. If you were willing to do the rename trick that would be the folder you would need to touch.

I got them working through installing the new icons...
                        Thanks anyway

Has anyone else's install gotten broken with the last batch of updates? After kdm splash I get a plasma workspace error and KDE does not load properly, no way to get to the launcher or anything else. Also, the same saved session keeps loading. Essentially, the Kubuntu install is hosed.

Did you try to boot Recovery Mode, and then choose "Fix X"?

If you're running a proprietary video driver, you might need to reinstall it.

No luck. Ran dpkg too. Still SIGSEGV error.

Okay, here is the fix for the SIGSEGV error: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3097781.0

Having delved into Kubuntu and KDE 4.1.2 in more depth over the past few days, I'm finding a lot of things that are a kind of flakey. There are also some configuration options where I feel like Gnome is actually more configurable (I thought KDE was supposed to specialize in making all the configuration options available with GUI and being very flexible).

                                For example, configuration-wise:

I want to be able to rearrange the open windows in the task manager bar. In Gnome I can move them around and arrange them better (very useful when going back and forth between a few windows when there are many open.) It seems they are stuck in the order they were opened with KDE.

Also, I want to be able to unarchive things from right-click context menu. I found an applet for this on KDE apps, but the link is broken. This should just be standard or there should be a way to turn it on within KDE without having to install something.

And, for some reason the power-button does not give options when I press it, it goes straight to shutdown. It seems that this is broken for my laptop (looked at the config file for this and it seems like it should be giving the options). I can't find a configuration area to change the defaults for this.
