    Kubuntu 8.10 it is!

I got impatient and downloaded the beta 64-bit to test out a couple days ago. All I have to say is wow! The amount of polish on this release is incredible. I have loaded the live CD on both of my laptops and it looks like everything is working out of the box.

I feel like I could show this off to both my friends who run Vista and those who have OSX and it will look impressive in a side-by-side comparison. I have been running Ubuntu since 7.04 and dabbled a bit with Kubuntu. This time around, both laptops are going to have Kubuntu on them.

Looking forward to the stable release. Many thanks to the Kubuntu team!

The daily build ISO images are very close to final -- they are here:

You can wait for the official release, but it's not going to change much from now until then, and there will be a "rush" factor on the ISO downloads at that time.

Thanks dibl. Does the current build include Open Office 3?

        Nope.

But I installed it the other day from the downloaded tarball, and it seems fine, based on the little bit of experimentation I've done with it. You have to use the " --force-architecture" option to install on 64-bit. There's a post here somewhere about it.

So, no hope of OOo 3 making it to stable release?

            Not in 8.10, AFAIK.

Is Firefox 3 Gnome specific? Seems like a lot of extra stuff needs to be installed.

Nope. What extra stuff? I just add a few multimedia plugins, and use it more or less in default configuration. I know there are a lot of tweaks possible, but I don't tweak it much.

I installed with the Live CD to test. Using Adept, it seems like a lot of packages are listed with "GTK" / "Gnome"during the install.

Anyone tried the release candidate? I think I am going in :-)

Well, I couldn't go all that far, the installer told me that there was no NVIDIA driver for my card in 8.10, so I cancelled. Good news is: it seems to have come back to normal. Has anyone else seen this error message?

I've got the latest daily ISO installed on my secondary laptop. Blown away so far.

It seems there really are some NVIDIA issues:

                          https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/261977

I guess I'll wait for the final release. Thanks!

Ah, this is exactly what's going on (from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810 )
                            nVidia "legacy" video support

The 71 and 96 series of proprietary nVidia drivers, as provided by the nvidia-glx-legacy and nvidia-glx packages in Ubuntu 8.04, are not compatible with the X.Org included in Ubuntu 8.10. Users with the nVidia TNT, TNT2, TNT Ultra, GeForce, GeForce2, GeForce3, and GeForce4 chipsets are affected and will be transitioned on upgrade to the free nv driver instead. This driver does not support 3D acceleration.

Users of other nVidia chipsets that are supported by the 173 or 177 driver series will be transitioned to the nvidia-glx-173 or nvidia-glx-177 package instead. However, unlike drivers 96 and 71, drivers 173 and 177 are only compatible with CPUs that support SSE (e.g. Intel Pentium III, AMD Athlon XP or higher). Systems with older CPUs will also be transitioned to the nv driver on upgrade.
What does this mean? Is NVIDIA goding to provide new binary drivers for the new xorg? Or are we going to have to get stuck in the past? Anyone knows?

                            Thanks!
