Good. Does seem to be an issue. Did you try what Daniel said:
"In initramfs, if I type "exit", the system continues to boot normally and everything works fine. How about you?"

Re: kubuntu fails to load after grub menu

Good. With Busybox popping up here and there during boot-up, maybe that's a decent stratgey to try in any case, assuming one doesn't know what else to do: type exit!

Glad it shook loose for you.

Re: kubuntu fails to load after grub menu

I did a clean install of Kubuntu II (64bit) from the Live CD, on a PC with 2 hard disks. After restart, I experienced the same problem as Chylee and Fred.

I found http://ge.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?t=813090, and followed kebes' advice. I run Puppy Linux from CD, and used it to check "/etc/fstab". After backing it up, I changed the UUID listings for mountpoints to my device paths (like "/dev/sda1"). The same thing I did for "/boot/grub/menu.lst", changing UUIDs to "/dev/sda1" or to "(hd0,0)", following the examples given in the same file. I attached this file to my comment in Chylee's bug report, in case it helps others: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+b...74/comments/11

With this changes written to both files, I was able finally to boot into my new Kubuntu II without other problems.

Re: kubuntu fails to load after grub menu

I had the exact same problem with upgrading from Hardy.

At the (initramfs) shell, type 'exec run-init'

With any luck, it should proceed to boot.

I have an older kernel, 2.6.24 at the grub menu. When I chose that, it booted, but x did not start. An attempt to start manually (login text mode and type 'startx') gave errors relating to the nvidia driver, so I changed all mentions of 'nvidia' (in lower case) in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf to 'nv' and x started.

You might try manually installing this kernel.

The 2.6.27 kernel gives the error even if I change to root=/dev/sda6 (my root device) in grub

              For reference, here's my setup:

SCSI drive, sda1 is /boot on ext2, sda5 is swap, sda6 is / on xfs
PATA drive, hda1 is my data (no NOT my homedir; my homedir contains a symlink to it)

Another thread mentioned a problem with pata and sata on the same system; maybe pata and scsi also cause the problem.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

Re: kubuntu fails to load after grub menu

I am having the same issue, on XFX 780i mobo.

I tried quite a few things to fix it - finally found a solution - different to those currently mentioned.

When one goes into grub on boot - press escape to bring up the menu.
press e to edit on the line with something blah blah blah root=UID=(some hash)
before the root=UID part add rootdelay=500 (i tried down to 100 still worked) as far as I can see it basically lets the kernel wait for the disk longer cos my motherboard is being lazy. After abit more time than usual it will begin to load normally.

Its really anoying hardy worked like a dream on my machine - then i thought meh i'll upgrade and it went down the toilet. Frustration level rising...

You know that sounds like a good idea. It's clear the devices ARE being found - just not soon enough. I'll try that and see what happens.

Yeah, Intrepid is being a pain. It's worse for us KDE users because it's the 3/4 changeover, which I think compares to the XP/Vista switch in terms of being an upheaval.

Re: kubuntu fails to load after grub menu

hehe, I am currently posting from my vista installation - god damn i hate this os. But yeah I had done a bit of testing I decided to take out all my other drives and only have my 1 sata drive and 2 dvd/crw drives installed ( just narrowed the possibilities ). I did actually get it to boot normally except then i decided it would be a good idea to update drivers / kernel as well and well it all died in the ass again. Going to give it another shot shortly tho, I previously was using straight Ubuntu (gnome) and well I thought I would give KDE a shot seeing Qt I think may be abit cleaner than gtk.

                    Wish me luck.

Ok currently posting from an un-updated 8.10 intrepid install so yeah can get it. Also for those that might be having issues even after rootdelay - or the exit solutions. I think you must have apic'ing disabled on the motherboard bios as well. Going to try do some light updates and not kill the install - wish me luck again :P

From what I know now I think this is the most correct solution - as I understand it the UUIDs are taking way too long to be generated and so normal disks names would be a far better solution if your drive setup doesnt change very often.

Also got nvidia driver working with sli so pretty much up to speed again.

Re: kubuntu fails to load after grub menu

Intrepid appears to have changed my device names relative to hardy, so if one is using device names rather than UUIDs already, there's the problem. And that would be why my setting root=/dev/sda6 hadn't worked - because it's now sdb6!

I fixed mine by swapping drive 0 in a 2 SCSI drive system. It seemed the cache was fried. It now install/boots.

However, my NIC is not working.
