unable to startx after upgrade from 8.04 kde4

    Hi all!

After the upgrade from HH 8.04 I'm not able to start xserver.
At boot everything seems right, but when I type user and password in the login form the screen comes black, and the login form appear again, and again, and again...

I tried login in console mode, and I am able to login correctly.
When I type startx I have a warning about kbmcomp and then xserver doesn't start.

I tried to backup my old working xorg.conf, but nothing changed.
I also tried to run 'nvidia-xconfig' but the generated file is equal to the old one and again nothing changed.

I don't know if it's useful, but I post here the Xorg.0.log file, I'm not expert enough to understand what's happening.

    Thanks for help

The log you posted is not the one with the error.
Since X server crashed and then has restarted the corret to post is Xorg.0.log.old
I did the same mistake with my problem.

Re: unable to startx after upgrade from 8.04 kde4

        Hi All,

I am new to this fourm and have searched for an answer to my problem. This thread is the closest I could find, so please forgive me if I've violated any sacred trust by posting here.

I am also very new to Linux. A few months ago I installed Ubuntu on my XP machine utilizing WUBI; however, I didn't use it much. Today I uninstalled Ubuntu and then installed Kubuntu 8.10, again using WUBI. The installation went very smoothly; however, I too got to the dreaded login screen and was unable to proceed.

Can someone give me guidance on this problem, whilst keeping in mind that I know about as close to nothing about Linux as one possibly can?

Do I need to uninstall and reinstall? Did I miss something when I was installing? I had absolutely no problem whatsoever installing and running Ubuntu, so I wouldn't think it would be a hardware issue.

Kubuntu 8.10 appears very promising and I'd be most grateful to anyone willing to help.

        Thanks in advance,

        ReV

Reboot. When at the Grub menu, select the second entry, which should be the recovery (single user) boot item. This will start Intrepid and put you at the command line prompt "as root." From the prompt type:
          Code:
          df -hTxtmpfs
Note the value under Use% for your root ( / ) partition and, if you have a separate home ( /home ) partition, the value of Use% for it as well. On my system, this is what the output of the command shows:
          Code:
Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
          /dev/sda1 ext3 8.0G 3.1G 4.5G 41% /
