Failed to start X on centrino notebook

I'm trying to test the beta 1 of Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex , on my notebook
DELL Latitude D500, Intel Centrino, chipset i855, 1Gbyte RAM
I downloaded and burned the iso "kubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-i386"
I'm unable to install because KDE starts then crashes after a few seconds during initializtion panel.
Then it tries to start again and again...
One time I saw the KDE destop, but after a while the notebook has frozen.

I did media test on the cd and memory test, everything ok.

Re: Failed to start on centrino notebook

    First Update

I installed using the alternate cd.
The installation process finished without any error.
On reboot I have the welcome screen and the prompt for Username and Password.
After that I se the KDE initialization panel and then it crashes and the login screen comes up again.
Loggin in from an alternative screen in text mode ok.
With dmesg nothig strange except at the end many
ipw2100: Fatal interrupt. Scheduling firmware restart
Where can I find the KDE log to check what happens?

      Check /var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages

I have the same problem , i am trying to use the Kubuntu 8.10 live cd on a dell desktop ( an old Pentium 4 with 700+ram ) all i get is the start up box, the icons flash and then black screen and trys again. Is there a way to fix this for the live cd?
        Thanks:<br />Using a Toshiba A300-21H ,3GB ram,Intel Core2Duo 2Ghz,Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD,intel wifi link 5100. Tux wants you!

Re: Failed to start on centrino notebook

Maybe is something related to the Intel Integrated Video Device.
I try also apt-get upgrade from console, many packages upgraded but same problem.

upon a search here http://www.uboontu.com, it looks like the ipw2100 fatal interrupt has to do with wireless firmware.

Yes maybe this affect only the wireless NIC and does not cause the main problem with KDE

Re: Failed to start on centrino notebook

Are you just running Kubuntu from the live cd or is it installed?
                I think I am confused.

try booting into recovery mode then type in dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg.
                  then type startx

[edit] if the first commands gives an error try it this way..
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg -phigh then startx

                    Now it's installed.
I did it with the alternate install cd and text based installation.
With live cd I could not start or install cause graphic mode does not work.

I had already tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg in incteractive mode before.
Now I tried also with the switches you told me but it doesn't work.
I don't understand why dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg in incteractive mode does not ask me about video card server and monitor like the old kde version did.
Only questions about frame buffer and keyboard

This seems a little strange to me. The software is not recognising this display plane and then switching to B. (which I think would be for external monitor, not sure)
What happens if you toggle f8 key for switching to external monitor?
If nothing, try checking your BIOS for display settings.

Nothing happens. Also in the bios the are not settings about integrated video except stretching the VGA video size to fit the panel.
I believe is a bug of xorg intel integrated drivers, I saw many similar case reported also in KDE official forum, but unfortunately I haven't found the correct workaroung 'til now.
