Dist-upgrade doesn't get past preparing to install

And there is no message whatsoever... it just crashes. And I've tried every possible sources.list combination, but nothing worked... any ideas?

- upgrade from the 8.04 to the 8.10
- upgrading existing 8.10


Official/recommended way to upgrade > Kubuntu 8.10 Beta > Intrepid Upgrades Kubuntu


Have you tried to ?:
- simulate > Topic: Upgrade Test
- use another front-end (aptitude... > FAQ: Package Managers)

i'm trying to update from 8.04.1 to 8.10 and i'm following the offical way...

so... does the distro-update differ in any way from just changing the repositories and doing a full upgrade?

I've tried running the dist-upgrade tool from console (you can find it on /tmp/kde-root), and it happens the same, but i have this message:

I got an error message - "Cannot get exclusive lock" - or something like that - after it had downloaded the channel info and started checking the package manager. It suggested that I had another tool like apt running - which I didn't.

Trying again it just exited without any message at that stage.

I am also having problems with this. When I run through the konsole this I do get an error message informing me why it could not proceed. Here is the message.

I have got nothin. I have searched and tried just about everything. This has been a reported bug going back to dapper but the suggested work around for those versions didn't work for me on this version. Not sure if it is a repository issue or not. I continue to search.

I'm not clear whether the OP's report is related to upgrading from 8.04, or a to kernel upgrade within 8.10.

After installing 8.10 over this past weekend, from the 4 OCT daily build Live CD ISO, I have run dist-upgrade from the command line twice with no issues, except there does seem to be some lag in the feedback to the screen (i.e. a very long wait at "96%" before it finishes). Yesterday, apt-get dist-upgrade did not automatically install the new 2.6.27-6 kernel, although it appeared to install all other pending packages. Subsequently I ran Synaptic and marked it and installed it, and it worked correctly and booted correctly. So, that's my little data point for the thread.

I'm trying to upgrade from 8.04 following the steps from wiki and i think that all people from here have the same problem. I've tried a new way running from console: python dist-upgrade.py --frontend=DistUpgradeViewText

I am still having no luck with this either. Trying to go from 8.04 to 8.10. Wonder if it might just be worth it wait till the official release date?

I have the exact same issue. I am running 8.04 KDE 4 remix. It gets to the preparing to update and the window just disappears. >

I've managed to upgrade successfully and I would like to share my experience. After reading horror stories concerning Adept I decided to use the Alternate CD. I burned daily build and did everything by the book. Of course I did receive:
python dist-upgrade.py
can't load DistUpgradeViewGtk (No module named vte)
error just like some of you did. I made some googling and it turned out I had to install an extra package - python-vte, which I didn't have and obviously nobody mentioned it in official how-to. I was able to run updater once more. Unfortunately it crashed again - after I chose to use my internet connection to get the newest packages available. This time no amount of search helped me. So I chose an offline update and experienced no further problems.
Make no mistake. It's still beta release so if are not an experienced user wait for final release. I'm still combing through my system looking for problems. So far I found:
1. some packages (like my mysql server) were uninstalled and not reinstalled.
2. I had to purge firefox (along with all plugins and firefox/mozilla related packages). Browser became very unstable and it was apparently some local fluke. As far I know nobody else experienced the same problem as me on Intrepid.
3. Upgrade did not remove/reinstall all hardy packages. I'm still finding them occasionally.
4. There are still some dependencies problems
5. there's no working support for bluetooth on KDE4 desktop. I had to use gnome-bluez.
